Living in Campolide, Lisbon

West of Avenida da Liberdade, on the hill. Traditional residential bairro, authentic neighborhood life, close to the great Aqueduto das Águas Livres.

Campolide is a residential bairro west of Avenida da Liberdade, on the hill that rises from the center. The legendary Aqueduto das Águas Livres (1748, Pombaline engineering) crosses the bairro — one of the most impressive aqueducts in Europe, still visitable today. The Universidade Nova de Lisboa has its main campus here.

Who lives here

Middle-class Portuguese families, university students (Nova), a growing share of expats on tight budgets. Few tourists.

What it's like during the day

Traditional neighborhood life. Praça de Campolide is the center. The streets climb — the gradient is significant. The Parque Eduardo VII is close by (to the east), the Parque Florestal de Monsanto is behind (to the west).

What it's like in the evening

Quiet. Student bars (because of the university), traditional tasques. To go out you head downtown (10 min by metro).

Getting around

Metro Praça de Espanha (blue line), Marquês de Pombal (10 min on foot). Capillary buses.

Campolide is the right pick for university students, expats on tight budgets, and for those who want a central-but-quiet neighborhood with the Monsanto green lung behind the house.
