Living in el Besòs, Barcelona

Far north-east, between the Forum and the river Besòs. Working-class neighbourhood in transformation, the sea a short walk away, prices among the most accessible in the city.

History and identity

The neighbourhood takes its name from the Besòs river, which marks Barcelona's eastern boundary with Sant Adrià, and from the Maresme, the historic coast. For most of the 20th century it was semi-rural and then home to working-class settlements built to receive internal Spanish migration (Andalusia, Murcia, Extremadura) in the 1950s-60s. The big social-housing blocks of the 60s — the so-called "polígonos de vivienda" — still characterise much of the fabric. In the last 20 years the Forum redevelopment (2004) and the new diagonal of tech buildings near Diagonal Mar have brought the neighbourhood closer to the 21st-century city, but the core remains working-class.

What to expect

Tall 60s-70s blocks, open space between towers, a few newer buildings. The population is young and very multi-ethnic: long-standing internal-migration families, Moroccan, Pakistani, Chinese and Latin American communities, and a new wave of young professionals drawn by moderate prices and the sea. Authentic street life, especially around the Rambla de Prim. Very little tourism. The neighbourhood coexists with the proximity of the Forum (concerts, events) and constant transformation works.

Transport

Metro L4 (Maresme | Fòrum, Besòs | Mar, El Maresme | Fòrum), tram T4 along Diagonal toward the centre. Buses H14, H16, V31, V33. R1 trains from nearby Sant Adrià station. Centre in 25 minutes by metro or tram. Excellent for cycling: wide flat streets, continuous bike lanes along Diagonal.

What to do in the neighbourhood

Platja del Fòrum and Platja de la Mar Bella, both walkable — less touristy than the central beaches. Parc del Fòrum, an enormous open space with summer events (Primavera Sound, Cruïlla, artisan markets). Mercat del Besòs. Centre de Convencions Internacional (CCIB) and Museu Blau natural-science museum (iconic Herzog & de Meuron architecture). Parc del Litoral and bike paths along the Besòs river toward Santa Coloma. Neighbourhood bars, South American and Moroccan family restaurants. The new Plaça Llull-Pujades is a centre of urban renewal.

Who it's ideal for

Young families wanting more moderate prices with access to the sea, professionals working at the Forum or in 22@, students looking for affordable, well-connected rooms. Beach lovers and summer-event-goers. Less suited to those seeking a historic atmosphere, fine dining, or neighbourhoods with traditional Catalan street life.
