Living in Tibidabo, Barcelona

The mountain that overlooks Barcelona. Three villages separated from the city, where living means waking up above the rooftops, between woods and morning fog.

History and identity

The neighbourhood brings together three distinct settlements — Vallvidrera, el Tibidabo and les Planes — all on the ridge of the Collserola sierra, Barcelona's green lung. Vallvidrera began as a rural village of charcoal-burners and farmers, then in the 19th century became a summer colony for the Barcelona bourgeoisie, who built modernist towers there to escape the heat below. Tibidabo is the highest point (512m): in 1899 the oldest still-operating amusement park in Spain was built here, and in 1902 the Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor, the silhouette visible from anywhere in the city. Les Planes stayed more rural, with Sunday grills in the woods. Administratively part of Barcelona, the identity remains that of mountain villages.

What to expect

Living here means living outside the city. Detached houses, small low-rise blocks, restored modernist villas. Density is very low. The population is a mix of old Vallvidrera families, professionals who chose calm, a few artists. In winter it's colder than the centre and fog rolls in; in summer the temperature drops 3-4°C compared to Eixample. You hear birdsong, not horns. Evenings are completely silent.

Transport

Funicular de Vallvidrera from Peu del Funicular (FGC L7) — the most scenic climb in the city. FGC trains from Les Planes, Baixador de Vallvidrera, Peu del Funicular to Plaça Catalunya in 20 minutes. The historic Tramvia Blau (restored and reactivated) climbs to the Tibidabo funicular. A car is almost essential for the higher settlements. No metro. Commuting to the centre is doable, but needs planning.

What to do in the neighbourhood

Parc d'Atraccions Tibidabo (historic, with the airplane ride spinning since 1928). Temple del Sagrat Cor at the summit — 360° views. Collserola trails in every direction: for cyclists, hikers, runners. Mirador de l'Alcalde above Vallvidrera. The square of Vallvidrera with the church and three historic bars. Swimming at the Pantà de Vallvidrera in summer. Les Planes has its old farmhouses converted into restaurants where the speciality is grilled meat. The Cosmocaixa science museum sits at the lower edge and is reachable on foot.

Who it's ideal for

Those seeking absolute calm, contact with nature, village life inside the big city. Families wanting space. Remote workers. Cyclists, runners, hikers. Less suited to those who need metro access nearby, evening social life, daily access to large supermarkets and restaurants.
