Living in Diagonal Mar, Barcelona
At the eastern end of the Diagonal, on the seafront. An ultra-modern neighborhood born after 2004 (Forum of Cultures), with residential skyscrapers, a park, a shopping mall and a beach. 21st-century Barcelona.
Diagonal Mar is the most modern area of Barcelona — born after the 2004 Forum of Cultures, it occupies the northeastern tip of the coast with residential skyscrapers, luxury hotels, the Centre Comercial Diagonal Mar, the large Parc Diagonal Mar designed by Enric Miralles, and the beach. Contemporary architecture, order, generous spaces.
Who lives here
Tech professionals from the nearby 22@ district, expats on high salaries, upmarket Portuguese and Brazilian families, well-off retirees. Very few working-class residents — prices are high for the level of services.
What it's like during the day
Orderly, modern, international life. The seafront is a very long cycling promenade — all the way to Maremàgnum in the south. Platja del Bogatell and Platja de la Mar Bella are the closest beaches. Parc del Forum hosts large concerts (Primavera Sound).
What it's like in the evening
Quiet. Luxury hotels with bars, restaurants in the shopping mall, a few spots along the seafront. For nightlife you head to Poblenou (10 min by bike) or downtown (20 min by metro).
Getting around
Metro El Maresme/Fòrum (L4), Selva de Mar (L4). Tram T4. Airport reachable in 30 min with one transfer.
When NOT to pick it
If you're looking for historic, authentic Catalan atmosphere: Diagonal Mar is new and impersonal. If you want to walk to the Gòtic. If you're looking for affordable prices.
Diagonal Mar is the right pick for those who want modern comfort, the sea within walking distance, and accept an area without history in exchange for space and services.
