La Sagrera is a residential bairro in the Sant Andreu district, in the northeastern part of the city. Its recent transformation is dominated by the major project of the new AVE La Sagrera-Sant Andreu station, a high-speed rail hub designed to outdo the centrality of Sants. When the project is complete, La Sagrera will become a European mobility node — Madrid-Barcelona-Paris.
Who lives here
Historical Catalan lower-middle-class families. A growing share of expats on tight budgets. Few tourists — the neighborhood is off the circuits.
What it's like during the day
Traditional neighborhood life. Carrer de la Sagrera and Carrer Garcilaso are the main streets. Small markets, bakeries, chain supermarkets. Close to Parc de la Pegaso and to the new Parc Lineal de la Sagrera, nearing completion.
What it's like in the evening
Quiet. Neighborhood bars, a few family-run restaurants. To really go out you head downtown (15 min by metro).
Getting around
Metro La Sagrera (L1, L5, L9, L10). Suburban Rodalies. Capillary buses. Excellent transport position — already today, and expanding with the high-speed rail.
When NOT to pick it
If you're looking for historic or touristy atmosphere. If you want to walk to the Gòtic. If the area still feels "under construction" to you (it is).
La Sagrera is the right pick for those seeking affordable prices today in a zone with future upside, and for those who travel often outside Barcelona — the new station will change everything.
