Living in Provençals del Poblenou, Barcelona

The northern part of Poblenou, on the edge with Sant Andreu. Converted factories, social-housing blocks, new buildings: the less-known Poblenou.

History and identity

Provençals del Poblenou is the northern strip of the old industrial Poblenou, running along Gran Via toward the east. It started in the late 19th century as a zone of textile mills, foundries and railway workshops, in continuity with the heart of the "Catalan Manchester". In the 1950s-60s, large social-housing blocks went up next to the factories to house the workers. When industry collapsed in the 1970s, the neighbourhood was left in a grey zone: neither fully residential nor still industrial. The 22@ plan of the 2000s started the transformation here too, but at a slower pace than in Parc del Poblenou: you still see active warehouses, depots, workshops. It's the least postcard Poblenou.

What to expect

Heterogeneous fabric: tall 60s-70s blocks, 19th-century workers' tenements, still-active industrial sheds, a few new buildings. Wide streets designed for industrial traffic, sometimes bare pavements. The population is a mix of long-standing working-class families, immigration (Pakistani, South American, Chinese), and young professionals who found here larger and cheaper apartments than central Poblenou. Slow neighbourhood life, no tourism, a few historic bars.

Transport

Metro L4 (Selva de Mar, Poblenou, Maresme | Fòrum). Tram T4. Buses H16, V27, V31. Centre in 20 minutes. Good connection to Sagrera (future high-speed rail station) in 10 minutes by bike. Wide bike lanes. Glòries centre in 15 minutes.

What to do in the neighbourhood

Can Ricart — preserved 19th-century industrial complex, now a cultural centre and a space for associations (Hangar, artist studios). Cementiri del Poblenou (in Provençals) — one of the most evocative historic cemeteries in the city, with 19th-century funerary sculpture. Parc Diagonal Mar to the south (Diagonal Mar neighbourhood). Plaça de les Glòries in transformation, 15 minutes by bike. Neighbourhood bars, Mexican taquerías, Chinese restaurants. Bogatell beach 15 minutes away.

Who it's ideal for

Young professionals seeking larger and cheaper apartments than central Poblenou, families with access to parks and the sea, workers at 22@ and Sagrera. People who appreciate post-industrial aesthetics and non-gentrified spaces. Less suited to those looking for polished neighbourhoods, gourmet restaurants, or historic Catalan atmosphere.
