Living in Mariendorf, Berlin
South of Tempelhof, residential and family-friendly. Mariendorf is a classic Berlin Kiez off the tourist radar — orderly, green and practical.
Mariendorf is a residential district south of Tempelhof along the Tempelhofer Damm-Mariendorfer Damm axis. A farming village absorbed by Berlin in 1920, it now mixes Wilhelmine Altbau, 1950s-70s blocks and single-family houses. It's one of the most "ordinary Berlin" places in the city — few tourists, plenty of families, real Kiez life.
Origin and character
First mentioned in 1349, Mariendorf was a Tempelhofer Berge village for centuries. Heavy urbanisation came in the early 20th century with bourgeois Altbau along the main road. The population is a blend of long-standing German families, a sizeable Turkish community, second-generation immigrants, and a few young arrivals looking for alternatives to central rents.
What to expect
Mariendorfer Damm is the commercial spine: bakeries, supermarkets, Turkish and German restaurants, hairdressers, pizzerias. Side streets with detached houses or small blocks, well-kept gardens. The historic village core of Alt-Mariendorf around the medieval church has real charm. Families with children, older residents, an active Turkish business community.
Transport
U6 terminates at Alt-Mariendorf (the southern end of the line through Tempelhof). M76, M77 and other buses run along Tempelhofer Damm and to Steglitz. Alexanderplatz and Friedrichstraße are 25-30 minutes by U-Bahn. A solid cycling network.
What to do here
Mariendorf racetrack has hosted harness racing for over 100 years — a uniquely Berlin, popular and traditional experience. Volkspark Mariendorf offers lawns, ponds and playgrounds. The Tempelhofer Feld (15 minutes by U-Bahn) is close enough for outdoor sport. Weekly market at Ullsteinstraße. Several indoor and outdoor pools in the area.
Best fit for
Families with children wanting more space and reasonable rents, workers in Tempelhof and Lichtenrade, people after a "real Berlin" without an expat scene. Less suited if you're after nightlife, trendy restaurants or short commutes to the centre.
