Living in Olivais, Lisbon
North-eastern Lisbon freguesia, between the airport and Parque das Nações. A residential 50s-80s neighbourhood, well-served, moderate prices, fast access to everything.
History and identity
Olivais takes its name from the olive groves that dominated the area until the 20th century. It was a rural freguesia documented from the Middle Ages, home to the Quinta dos Olivais and major religious-order estates. The modern transformation began in the 1950s-60s with the "Bairro de Olivais" plan — one of the most ambitious modernist urbanism experiments in Portugal: Olivais Sul (1959-1964) and Olivais Norte (1955-1958) were designed as "cities within the city", with rationalist buildings set in greenery, schools, kindergartens, markets, public spaces. Leading architects (Nuno Teotónio Pereira, João Vasconcelos Esteves) signed the blocks and buildings. In 1998 the Expo '98 transformed the eastern strip of Olivais into the new Parque das Nações, regenerating the riverfront.
What to expect
Modernist 50s-80s residential fabric (Olivais Norte and Sul), new buildings of Parque das Nações on the riverfront, and historic cores (Olivais Velho with 18th-19th century cottages). Wide streets, tree-lined avenues, local parks, schools, hospitals. The population is mixed: middle- and working-class Portuguese families, immigration (Cape Verdean, Brazilian, Asian), professionals from the new Parque das Nações hub. Daily neighbourhood life, supermarkets, weekly markets. No tourism (except Parque das Nações and the airport).
Transport
Metro Red Line (Olivais, Chelas) and Green Line (Cabo Ruivo, Bela Vista). Gare do Oriente station (Lisbon-Porto high-speed line, metro, buses, trains) to the south-east. Buses 705, 727, 783, 794. Airport 5 minutes on foot/by bus. Centre reachable in 15 minutes by metro.
