Living in Çayyolu, Ankara

Kiralık oda Living in Çayyolu, Ankara - komisyonsuz, doğrudan ev sahibi - Ankara

Ankara's leafy western suburb - spacious apartments, gated complexes and green space, built up since the late 1960s around an old village. The M2 metro runs straight into Kızılay, the malls and parks anchor daily life, and rooms here trade central buzz for family-grade calm.

Çayyolu is one of the largest residential areas on the western edge of Ankara, set roughly twenty kilometres out from the city centre, west of Hacettepe University's Beytepe campus and just inside the ring road. It started life as an old Turkish village - renamed Çayyolu in 1967 - and from the following year onward, housing projects steadily transformed the rural land around it into a planned, spread-out suburb. Administratively it sat in the Yenimahalle district until 2012, when it was transferred into Çankaya. Today it reads as one of Ankara's most established upper-middle-class areas: spacious apartments and villas, gated complexes, shopping malls, and a generous amount of green space.

Who lives here

Settled, comfortable and family-oriented. Çayyolu is squarely an upper-middle-class part of the city, and it draws people who want room to spread out - families with children especially, in the larger 3+1 and 4+1 flats and the gated site complexes. Academics and professionals are a strong presence, helped by the university campuses and technology parks within reach to the south and east. It has long had a reputation as one of the areas favoured by Ankara's international community - embassy staff, people at international organisations and companies, researchers on multi-year postings - who come for the space and the calm. The overall feel is settled and residential rather than young and transient; this is somewhere people put down roots.

What it's like during the day

Quiet, green and low-rise by Ankara standards. The defining quality is space: wide streets, parks and playgrounds, and apartment blocks set back behind gardens rather than crowded onto the pavement. Daily life orbits the malls and the avenues around them - Galleria (one of the city's oldest malls, on the Ümitköy side), Arcadium on 8th Street, and Gordion nearer the centre of Çayyolu - which between them cover supermarkets, shops, cinemas and everyday errands. It is an unhurried, suburban daytime: school runs, coffee, walks in the green areas, shopping. The trade-off for the calm is that you are a real distance from the historic core and the dense central neighbourhoods.

What it's like in the evening

Easygoing rather than lively. The social life here is built around cafés, casual restaurants and the malls rather than a bar-and-club scene - third-wave coffee places, breakfast houses and family-friendly eateries do better than late-night venues. The neighbouring Ümitköy stretch is the more bustling, restaurant-and-café-heavy side; Çayyolu itself leans calmer and greener. For a proper night out - the beer gardens of Sakarya, the cocktail bars of Tunalı Hilmi - residents take the metro into Kızılay and Kavaklıdere. By late evening the suburban streets are quiet.

Getting around

The single biggest asset is the M2 metro line, which opened in March 2014 and runs from the western suburbs straight into Kızılay, Ankara's central interchange. The line's western terminus is Koru, with Çayyolu and Ümitköy as the stops serving this area, and it threads through Beytepe, Bilkent, ODTÜ and Söğütözü on the way in - so the commute to the centre is a clean rail ride rather than a battle with traffic. At Kızılay you change onto the rest of the network (the M1, M2 and M4 metro lines and the Ankaray). EGO buses and dolmuş minibuses fill in the local links, and you pay with a Başkentkart. That said, the suburb is built around the car and the distances inside it are large; many residents drive, and the ring road is close at hand.

Universities nearby

This western corridor is rich in campuses, which is part of why academics and students appear in the mix. Hacettepe University's Beytepe campus sits just to the east of Çayyolu, and Bilkent University lies along the metro line toward the centre - both have their own M2 stations (Beytepe and Bilkent), making the commute from a Çayyolu room straightforward. Middle East Technical University (METU / ODTÜ), with its vast wooded campus, is also on the line at the ODTÜ stop. Başkent University and Çankaya University are within reach on this side of the city as well. The concentration of campuses, technology parks and research institutions out here keeps steady demand for rooms among postgraduates, researchers and staff.

Eating and shopping

Shopping is genuinely strong for a suburb, because the malls do the heavy lifting: Galleria, Arcadium and Gordion between them cover supermarkets, brand stores, cinemas and food courts, and the avenues around them add bakeries, greengrocers, pharmacies and everyday shops. The eating scene is café-led and family-friendly - Turkish breakfast houses, kebapçı, pizza-and-grill places and a growing run of specialty-coffee spots, with the livelier concentration of restaurants and cafés on the Ümitköy side. Prices sit at the comfortable, upper-middle end rather than the student-cheap end you'd find around Bahçelievler or Cebeci.

When NOT to pick it

If you want to be in the thick of the city, Çayyolu is the wrong choice - it is a suburb, a fair distance from the historic core, the ministries and the central nightlife, and life here leans on the metro and the car. The social scene is quiet and family-flavoured rather than young and buzzing; if you're after beer gardens and a dense bar strip on the doorstep, you'll be commuting to Kızılay for them. Housing skews toward larger family flats and gated complexes, so genuinely cheap single rooms are less common than in the student quarters, and the upper-middle-class character is reflected in the rents. Çayyolu is at its best for families, academics, professionals and internationals who want space, greenery, malls and a clean metro commute - and who happily trade central-city energy for suburban calm.
