The upscale heart of Çankaya, strung along Tunalı Hilmi Caddesi and anchored by Kuğulu Park. Embassies, boutiques, terraces and the city's most polished café and nightlife scene - central, walkable and priced accordingly.

Kavaklıdere is a neighbourhood of the central Çankaya district, a short way south of Kızılay along the spine of Atatürk Boulevard. It is one of Ankara's most prestigious and developed quarters - the kind of address that mixes embassy gardens, smart apartment blocks and a dense, polished commercial strip. To most people in Ankara the area is simply known as "Tunalı", after Tunalı Hilmi Caddesi, the shopping and café street that runs through it, and Kuğulu Park - the small swan park whose birds have become a symbol of the city - sits at its centre. It is a relatively small neighbourhood by population, but it carries an outsized weight in the social and cultural life of the capital.

Who lives here

A settled, well-off and cosmopolitan population. Diplomats and embassy staff cluster here and in the adjoining embassy quarter, since many of Ankara's foreign missions sit within or close to Kavaklıdere's boundaries. Professionals, established families and older residents fill the well-maintained apartment stock along the tree-lined streets. It is also a magnet for young professionals - people who pay a premium to live within walking distance of the cafés, nightlife and central offices. Expats in Ankara tend to concentrate around exactly these embassy-adjacent neighbourhoods. It is one of the more secular, international and affluent corners of the city.

What it's like during the day

The neighbourhood centres on Tunalı Hilmi Caddesi, Ankara's upmarket shopping street, lined with boutiques, bookshops, bakeries and cafés. It is a place for browsing, people-watching and long coffee breaks; the pavements are busy from mid-morning, and the café terraces fill whenever the weather allows. Kuğulu Park, at the foot of the street, is the green refuge - a compact landscaped park with its ponds, swans, ducks and geese, popular with families and anyone wanting a pause from the traffic. The surrounding residential streets are quieter, leafy and noticeably calmer than nearby Kızılay.

What it's like in the evening

This is the sophisticated end of Ankara's nightlife. Where Kızılay offers cheap student beer gardens, Kavaklıdere and Tunalı Hilmi lean towards cocktail bars, wine bars, restaurants and terraces - higher in tone and in price. The atmosphere is energetic but more grown-up, busiest on evenings and weekends. There is a mix of stylish bars and more traditional taverns, and the area keeps going late without the rowdiness of the student strips further north. For an evening out that is central but a step more refined, this is where Ankara comes.

Getting around

Kavaklıdere sits on Atatürk Boulevard, the central axis of the city, which keeps it well connected by bus and within easy reach of the rail network. The Kızılay interchange - the hub of Ankara's metro and the Ankaray light rail - is a short ride or a walkable distance to the north, putting the rest of the network within reach. Numerous bus lines run along and around Atatürk Boulevard. Internally the neighbourhood is walkable, though Çankaya is hilly, so expect slopes on the residential streets climbing away from the main strip.

Eating and shopping

The food and café density is among the best in the city. Tunalı Hilmi concentrates the smarter restaurants, patisseries and cafés, with everything from Turkish dessert houses serving baklava and kadayıf to international menus and cocktail spots. Boutiques along the street cover fashion, accessories and local crafts; supermarkets, pharmacies and everyday shops line the boulevard and side streets. It is a neighbourhood where you can do your daily errands, find a good meal at almost any price point above budget, and still be home in minutes.

When NOT to pick it

If you want cheap, this is not it. Kavaklıdere is one of the most expensive neighbourhoods in Ankara - rents here carry a clear premium over the city average, driven by the embassy proximity, the well-kept building stock and the walkable lifestyle. The central strip is also busy and can be noisy, with heavy traffic on Atatürk Boulevard, and the terrain is hilly. Kavaklıdere is at its best for professionals, internationals and anyone who wants to be in the polished middle of the capital - close to the embassies, the cafés and the nightlife - and who accepts the higher prices, the slopes and the central-city bustle as the cost of the address.
