Living in Gràcia Nova, Barcelona

The eastern part of Gràcia, more modern, more spacious, less celebrated than la Vila de Gràcia. Same village-neighborhood appeal but a more accessible budget.

El Camp d'en Grassot i Gràcia Nova is the administrative barri east of la Vila de Gràcia. It urbanized later (late 19th - early 20th century) and has a different urban fabric: wider streets, modernista-style buildings typical of the Eixample blending into Gràcia, more regular blocks. For many residents it's "the Gràcia for those looking for a good compromise".

Who lives here

A mix of Barcelona families, professionals, mid-budget expats. More mainstream than la Vila de Gràcia, where the Catalan and bohemian identity is more marked. A good component of long-time elderly residents.

What it's like during the day

Orderly neighborhood life. Avinguda de Gaudí — the tree-lined street running from Plaça de Mossèn Jacint Verdaguer all the way to the Sagrada Família — crosses the area and is one of the most pleasant pedestrian spaces in the city, full of terraces and restaurants. The lesser-known streets have a quiet residential feel, with small neighborhood shops, bakeries, delis. The Mercat de l'Abaceria Central has been under renovation for years but remains a reference point.

What it's like in the evening

Quieter than la Vila de Gràcia. Wine bars, some chef-driven restaurants, family-run spots. Weekend evenings come alive but without the buzz of la Vila's squares. To go out more seriously, you head down to the Eixample or into la Vila.

Getting around

Metro Joanic (L4), Verdaguer (L4, L5), Alfons X (L4) on the edges. Sagrada Família (L2, L5) is a short walk away. Bike-sharing present. The streets are flatter than la Vila and biking works well.

Eating and shopping

Mercat de l'Abaceria Central (in renovation, with a provisional market nearby) and Mercat de la Llibertat. Distributed supermarkets. Restaurants: modern Catalan, Latin American, Asian. Avinguda de Gaudí concentrates many good tables.

When NOT to pick it

If you want the full "village inside the city" feel of Gràcia's squares — it's more diluted here. If you're after an intense indie scene: the artists, activists, and alternative shops are more in la Vila.

For those wanting Gràcia's character with a bit more space and a slightly more manageable budget, Camp d'en Grassot is probably the most sensible pick.
