Living in Charlottenburg, Berlin

Classic and bourgeois West Berlin. Schloss Charlottenburg, Ku'damm, luxury hotels, orderly life. For many it's "real Berlin" before reunification.

Charlottenburg is the big western bourgeois neighborhood, and for forty years (during the division) it was "the center" of West Berlin. The fall of the Wall shifted attention eastward, but Charlottenburg has remained well-off, orderly, with high-end services and a stable population. Schloss Charlottenburg, the Kurfürstendamm (Ku'damm), KaDeWe are the symbols — classic German elegance.

Who lives here

Traditional German bourgeoisie, high-level professionals, a historic elderly population, expats with above-average salaries and families. Few young singles (prices don't allow it unless you share). It's the favorite neighborhood for expat families with school-age kids in international schools (the JFK School is nearby), diplomats and multinational executives.

What it's like during the day

Orderly, civil life. Ku'damm is Berlin's big shopping avenue — from luxury brands to department stores. Quieter than before, but still frequented. Savignyplatz is the most characteristic square, with cafés, bookshops, decent restaurants. Stuttgarter Platz a quieter alternative. Schloss Charlottenburg, to the west, with its gardens, is a daily green lung.

What it's like in the evening

Quiet, restaurant-evening. Few nightlife venues, some historic cocktail bars, chef-driven restaurants. No young nightlife or techno clubs — those are elsewhere. To go out in the evening many residents head to Mitte.

Getting around

U1, U2, U7, S-Bahn (S5/S7/S75/S9 through Charlottenburg). Zoologischer Garten, Savignyplatz, Charlottenburg are the main stations. Decent connection to downtown (15-20 minutes to Alexanderplatz). Bike is popular. BER airport requires 50-60 minutes.

Eating and shopping

KaDeWe (the "Berlin Harrods") for gourmet. Edeka, Rewe, Bio Company capillary. Historic markets like Karl-August-Platz (Sat). Restaurants: traditional German, French, high-end Italian, sushi, a good vegetarian scene. Pricier than the east.

When NOT to pick it

If you're a young single looking for nightlife — Charlottenburg is too "asleep" in the evening. If you want an alternative and creative neighborhood — it's the farthest thing from "alternative Berlin" you could find. If you're on a low budget — rents are high compared to the average.

Charlottenburg is the right pick if you have a family with kids, if you want a well-maintained and safe neighborhood, if you like classic German elegance. Many expats with families moving to Berlin for work pick this area.
