Living in Lichtenberg, Berlin
East Berlin, ex-GDR, still working-class. Among the most accessible prices in the city, authentic neighborhood life, far from tourism. The Stasi Museum is here.
Lichtenberg is a large district east of Berlin, an important part of the ex-GDR. It's especially known for having housed the Stasi (the GDR's secret police) — the Stasi-Museum on the former HQ on Normannenstraße is now a must-visit to understand the country's history. The neighborhood is a mix of old Plattenbau (GDR prefabricated blocks), surviving pre-war Altbau, and new constructions. It's one of Berlin's neighborhoods where rents remain most contained.
Who lives here
A still-numerous historic GDR population, especially older. Lower-middle-class German families. A growing slice of expats with tight budgets (Italians, Poles, Vietnamese — Lichtenberg has one of Germany's largest Vietnamese communities, a GDR legacy). Young professionals seeking accessible prices.
What it's like during the day
Ordinary, non-tourist neighborhood life. Frankfurter Allee is the big artery crossing the neighborhood, with its monumental GDR architecture still intact — one of the most characteristic views of the ex-East. Dong Xuan Center is a large wholesale Vietnamese market, one of Europe's largest, worth visiting for the food and atmosphere. Tierpark Berlin is one of the two city zoos, huge. Schlosspark is a residential green area.
What it's like in the evening
Very quiet evenings. Few venues, GDR-style neighborhood pubs, Vietnamese and Turkish restaurants. To go out at night you head to Friedrichshain (10-15 minutes by S-Bahn).
Getting around
U5 (Frankfurter Allee, Magdalenenstraße, Lichtenberg), S-Bahn S5/S7/S8/S75 (Lichtenberg, Friedrichsfelde Ost, Rummelsburg). Lichtenberg is also a regional train station. Decent connection to downtown.
Eating and shopping
German discounters (Lidl, Aldi, Netto), Turkish and Vietnamese supermarkets. Dong Xuan Center for wholesale Vietnamese food and Asian specialties. Restaurants: very high-level Vietnamese (some of the city's best are here), kebab, family German. Prices among the lowest in the city.
When NOT to pick it
If you want to be near the tourist center: Lichtenberg is far (20-25 minutes to Alexanderplatz). If you want a high-level international cultural or gastronomic scene. If GDR aesthetics (Plattenbau, monumental avenues) depress you — though for some they're fascinating.
Lichtenberg is the right pick if you want truly accessible prices, if you want to live in a "non-expat" neighborhood with strong local identity, if you like Vietnamese food. For students and young people on tight budgets it's one of Berlin's best options.
