Living in Pankow, Berlin
North of Prenzlauer Berg, a classic ex-East Berlin sub-neighborhood. Residential, quiet, great for families. More accessible prices than downtown while maintaining good connection.
Pankow is a large district north of Berlin, and the Pankow Kiez (around the Pankow station) is the historic core — the former center of an independent municipality annexed to Berlin in 1920. During the GDR it was a rather privileged area, with residences of party officials. Today it's a quiet bourgeois neighborhood, with many green spaces, good schools, and a stable population.
Who lives here
Middle-class German families, a growing component of expats with kids (who come here after Prenzlauer Berg got too expensive), historic ex-GDR retirees, some creative professionals. One of the most stable and least volatile components of Berlin's population.
What it's like during the day
Orderly Kiez life. Bürgerpark Pankow is a large park with ponds, a zoo, restaurants — one of the most beloved parks in the northern part of the city. Schlosspark Schönhausen is another green area, with the small baroque Schloss Schönhausen. Streets have trees, buildings are mostly well-kept Altbau or renovated GDR-era blocks. Real neighborly life.
What it's like in the evening
Very quiet evenings. Few nightlife spots, some neighborhood pubs, family restaurants. To go out you head down to Prenzlauer Berg (5 minutes by tram or S-Bahn) or to Mitte.
Getting around
S-Bahn S2/S8/S85 (Pankow, Pankow-Heinersdorf). U2 line terminates at Pankow. Tram M1 connects directly to Mitte. Very good connection. Bike is popular and streets are bike-friendly.
Eating and shopping
Markt Pankow (Sat) for fresh produce. Capillary supermarkets (Edeka, Rewe, Aldi, Lidl). Restaurants: family-style German cuisine, some Italian and Asian, quiet brunches. No fine dining, but solid offering for daily life.
When NOT to pick it
If you're a young single looking for nightlife — Pankow is too quiet. If you want to be 10 minutes from Brandenburg Gate — here you're 25-30 minutes away. If you want an international cultural or gastronomic scene.
Pankow is the right pick if you have a family with kids and seek a quiet, safe neighborhood with good schools and parks within stroller reach, but you want to keep prices below Prenzlauer Berg. For many expat families seeking "the Prenzlauer Berg of the next decade" it's the smart pick.
