Living in Steglitz, Berlin

Southwest Berlin, ex-West Berlin bourgeois neighborhood. Quiet residential, great for families, near the Botanischer Garten and Grunewald.

Steglitz is a large district southwest of Berlin, part of old West Berlin. It's one of the most "German" neighborhoods in the city — fewer expats, less tourism, an orderly and traditionally bourgeois atmosphere. Schloßstraße is one of Germany's longest commercial streets (though not the most famous). The Botanischer Garten Berlin-Dahlem on the district's edge is one of Europe's largest botanical gardens.

Who lives here

Long-established bourgeois German families, professionals, a historic elderly population. Few expats (those here tend to have families and kids in German schools). University students of the FU (Freie Universität, nearby). Diplomats (the Dahlem area has many diplomatic residences).

What it's like during the day

Very orderly Kiez life. Schloßstraße is the big shopping avenue, with shopping centers (Boulevard Berlin, Das Schloss) and traditional shops. Bismarckplatz is the central square. Steglitzer Damm is the main boulevard. Side streets are silent residential, with single-family houses and well-kept Altbau. The Botanischer Garten is an excellent half-day destination.

What it's like in the evening

Very quiet evenings. Few nightlife venues, some family restaurants, traditional pubs. To go out you have to head toward Schöneberg (15 minutes by U-Bahn) or Mitte (25 minutes).

Getting around

U9 (Rathaus Steglitz, Schloßstraße), S-Bahn S1 (Botanischer Garten, Lichterfelde West, Lankwitz). Regional train toward Potsdam (nearby). Decent connection to downtown but always 20-25 minutes.

Eating and shopping

Capillary supermarkets (Edeka, Rewe, Kaufland), shopping centers. Markt Bismarckplatz (Sat). Restaurants: traditional German, Italian, Asian. No international fine dining.

When NOT to pick it

If you're a young single looking for nightlife: Steglitz is too "asleep". If you want a central and cosmopolitan life. If the lack of expats and internationality in a neighborhood weighs on you. If you need to be 10 minutes from downtown.

Steglitz is the right pick if you have a German or German-international family with kids, if you want an orderly and safe neighborhood, if prices being slightly below Charlottenburg but slightly above the eastern average suits you. For those wanting a "non-expat" and well-German life, Steglitz is natural.
