Bilbao's central commercial and financial district on the left bank of the Nervión. The Gran Vía with its dense banking and corporate offices, the BBVA Tower and Iberdrola Tower, Plaza Moyúa and the Abando-Indalecio Prieto railway station, Plaza Circular and the city's professional heart.

Abando is the central commercial-and-financial district on the left bank of the Nervión, between the Casco Viejo (just across the Puente del Arenal) and Indautxu on the west. The neighbourhood is anchored by the Gran Vía (the principal commercial avenue running west from Plaza Circular to Plaza Moyúa and onward), the imposing Plaza Moyúa roundabout with its grand Belle Époque buildings, the BBVA Tower (the new corporate headquarters of Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, opened 2022), the Iberdrola Tower (the 165-metre Pelli Clarke Pelli-designed corporate headquarters of Iberdrola), the Abando-Indalecio Prieto railway station and the dense run of banking, professional-services and corporate offices. The architectural texture is grand commercial - late-nineteenth-century Ensanche (the planned grid extension of the city), Belle Époque and modernismo apartment buildings, mid-twentieth-century commercial blocks, and the contemporary corporate towers.

Who lives here

A central-professional residential community in the upper floors of the commercial buildings, plus the surrounding residential streets. Banking and finance professionals at the surrounding offices, corporate professionals at the BBVA, Iberdrola and the legal-and-consulting firms, returning Bilbaíno professional families, retired upper-middle-class residents on the long-held Belle Époque apartments, and a moderate international layer drawn by the central position. The international mix is moderate. The day-time population is dominated by office workers; the evening population shifts toward the surrounding Casco Viejo and Indautxu nightlife.

What it's like during the day

The most consistently active commercial part of Bilbao. The Gran Vía, Plaza Moyúa, Plaza Circular and the surrounding streets carry constant office-worker commuter flows from early morning. The Abando-Indalecio Prieto railway station carries intercity and Cercanías commuter rail flows. The pedestrian retail along Gran Vía fills steadily - El Corte Inglés, Zara, H&M, Apple, the Spanish high-street chains, plus the dense cafeterías and pintxos bars at lunch (the menú del día lunch flow is intense). The Plaza Moyúa and Plaza Circular are among the most-photographed Bilbao streetscapes.

What it's like in the evening

Mixed. The commercial strip largely empties after 8 PM, with the evening centre of gravity shifting to the Casco Viejo across the river, Indautxu to the west, or the Abandoibarra riverfront cluster around the Guggenheim. A handful of restaurants and pintxos bars along Gran Vía, around Plaza Moyúa and on the Calle Ledesma and Calle García Rivero stay open later - these streets carry one of the densest pintxos concentrations in Bilbao after 7 PM. The Teatro Arriaga on the riverbank (technically Casco Viejo but functionally connected) anchors the cultural evening scene. The proximity to the Casco Viejo means many residents flow back and forth across the river through the evening.

Getting around

The most central transit address in Bilbao. Metro Bilbao L1 and L2 Moyúa and Abando stations are at the heart of the neighbourhood. The Abando-Indalecio Prieto mainline railway station handles Renfe intercity and Cercanías rail. The Tranvía de Bilbao runs along the riverbank with stops at Abando and Pío Baroja. Multiple Bilbobus lines converge. Walking to the Casco Viejo, the Guggenheim and Indautxu is five-to-fifteen minutes. By car, the centre is largely manageable, with several underground multi-storey car parks.

Eating and shopping

Comprehensive. The Gran Vía holds every major Spanish and international retailer - El Corte Inglés, Zara, Mango, Apple, the major chains. Restaurants are mixed - polished business-lunch venues, the pintxos density along Calle Ledesma and Calle García Rivero (these two parallel streets together hold one of the most concentrated pintxos strips in northern Spain), plus the Mercado de la Ribera across the river. Mercadona, El Corte Inglés food hall, and the smaller convenience shops handle daily groceries.

When NOT to pick it

If you want a residential neighbourhood feel, evening density on the doorstep or affordability. Abando is dominated by the commercial-and-financial functions - the residential population is small and the after-hours character empties rapidly. The Gran Vía and surrounding streets carry constant traffic and commercial-delivery noise during the day. Rents on the central Belle Époque apartments are among the highest in Bilbao. Heritage restrictions on the older buildings limit renovations. Some apartments retain original layouts with small kitchen footprints and limited natural light. The Aste Nagusia August festival crowd density and other major events flood the streets.

Abando rewards renters who want the most central commercial-and-financial Bilbao address - banking and corporate professionals walking to BBVA, Iberdrola and the Gran Vía offices, retired upper-middle-class residents on long-held apartments, and anyone who prizes proximity to the Abando railway station and the centre. For the genuine neighbourhood character, Indautxu immediately west and the Casco Viejo across the river offer more - but for the right resident, Abando is unmatched in centrality.
