Bilbao's residential quartier on the right bank of the Nervión north of the Casco Viejo. Belle Époque and early-twentieth-century apartment buildings, the Funicular de Artxanda base, the Mirador de Artxanda on the ridge above, and a settled family-residential character with central walking-distance access.

Uribarri is the residential neighbourhood on the right bank of the Nervión north of the Casco Viejo and east of Begoña. The name (literally "new town" in euskera) reflects the late-nineteenth-century origin of the district as a residential extension of the medieval Casco Viejo - built up along the ridge running north and the lower streets along the river. The architectural texture is mixed and distinguished - Belle Époque and early-twentieth-century apartment buildings dominate the lower streets (along Calle Uribarri and Avenida del Ferrocarril-extension), with surviving nineteenth-century houses on some side streets, mid-twentieth-century apartment housing on the rising slopes, and the imposing Funicular de Artxanda base station at the Plaza del Funicular anchoring the eastern edge.

Who lives here

A settled family-residential community. Long-settled Bilbaíno middle-class families across multiple generations on the older Belle Époque apartments, junior professionals at the surrounding Bilbao service sector, retired residents, returning Bilbaíno families, and a moderate immigrant layer settling into some of the older lower-cost rentals. The international mix is moderate. The community feels stable and unhurried.

What it's like during the day

A quiet residential rhythm. The Calle Uribarri and surrounding streets carry steady local trade - Eroski, Mercadona, the small shops, bakeries and cafeterías. Schools shape the morning and afternoon flows. The Funicular de Artxanda base draws tourist and local foot traffic toward the ridge-top Mirador de Artxanda (one of the most-loved panoramic views over Bilbao, with the basilica, the Guggenheim and the surrounding mountains visible on clear days). The Parque Etxebarria on the eastern edge gives the neighbourhood its main green lung. The architectural contrast between the Belle Époque grandeur and the mid-century workaday blocks gives the neighbourhood a layered character.

What it's like in the evening

Quiet and residential. A handful of restaurants and pintxos bars along Calle Uribarri and around the Funicular de Artxanda base keep the local social life going - traditional Basque, family-friendly, the long-running cafeterías. The Casco Viejo nightlife is a five-to-ten-minute walk along the riverbank. The destination evening scene is in the Casco Viejo, Indautxu and Bilbao La Vieja across the river. The neighbourhood centre of gravity remains residential.

Getting around

Excellent. Metro Bilbao L3 Uribarri station (opened 2017) sits in the neighbourhood itself, and the L1/L2 Casco Viejo station is five-to-ten minutes' walk south. Tranvía de Bilbao runs along the riverbank with stops at Uribitarte and Atxuri. Multiple Bilbobus lines cross. The Funicular de Artxanda climbs to the Mirador de Artxanda in three minutes. Walking to the Casco Viejo is five-to-ten minutes (mostly flat along the river, or steeper through the inland streets); to the Abando commercial centre fifteen.

Eating and shopping

A practical local offer. Eroski and Mercadona on Calle Uribarri and the smaller shops cover daily groceries. Bakeries, butchers and the Mercado de la Ribera across the river cover the wider food shopping. Restaurants are family-friendly traditional Basque pintxos bars and cafeterías. For destination dining, the Casco Viejo and Indautxu are within walking distance.

When NOT to pick it

If you want dense evening life within the neighbourhood, polished new-build quality or accessibility-friendly terrain. Uribarri is genuinely a residential pocket with the Casco Viejo nightlife immediately downhill - most evening density happens there rather than within the neighbourhood. The hillside slope means some streets are genuinely steep, and walking back up after a late night tests the legs. The mid-twentieth-century apartment stock varies sharply - some buildings have been beautifully renovated, others have ageing infrastructure and the typical Spanish-old-building issues. Heritage restrictions on the Belle Époque buildings limit renovations. The proximity to Begoña and the basilica-and-pilgrim flow on patron-saint feast days brings intense crowd density at specific times.

Uribarri rewards renters and families who want a settled residential right-bank Bilbao address with the Casco Viejo immediately downhill, the Funicular de Artxanda on the doorstep for ridge-top access, and the calm multi-generational community feel - at a slight discount to the Casco Viejo itself. For long-term Bilbaíno households and families wanting a quieter central address, Uribarri is one of the most practical picks in the right-bank centre.
