Living in Saint-Augustin, Bordeaux
Colocation Living in Saint-Augustin, Bordeaux - chambre à louer entre particuliers, sans agence - Bordeaux
The western residential quartier around the Église Saint-Augustin, with the Stade Chaban-Delmas football ground and the Parc des Sports nearby. Leafy, middle-class, with quick tram access to the centre.
Saint-Augustin is the calm residential quartier west of the Triangle d'Or and south of Caudéran, between Mériadeck and the boundary with Mérignac. The defining feature is the Église Saint-Augustin - a late-nineteenth-century neo-Gothic church on the place de l'Église - and the proximity to the Stade Chaban-Delmas (the historic Bordeaux football and rugby stadium, named after the late mayor and former prime minister Jacques Chaban-Delmas). The streets are mostly échoppes and small Haussmannian apartment buildings, with some single-family houses on the western edges. The Parc des Sports and the Parc Bordelais (one of Bordeaux's loveliest parks) are within walking distance.
Who lives here
Middle-class Bordelais families, professionals, retired couples, school teachers. A noticeable population of younger couples buying échoppes to renovate. The international expat presence is small but growing. Housing stock is mixed - échoppes, small Haussmannian apartment buildings, some single-family houses, and a few interwar villas. Rents are moderate-to-high - well above Belcier or Bastide, slightly below Saint-Bruno or Fondaudège.
What it's like during the day
A pleasant residential rhythm. The avenue du Maréchal-Joffre and avenue de la République commercial spines have bakeries, butchers, Pharmacie, a Carrefour Market, the small Saturday market on place de l'Église. The Parc Bordelais fills with families, dog walkers, runners, the famous duck pond, the small zoo and the playground. Schools and kindergartens structure the rhythm. Many residents commute to the centre by tram or work in Mérignac's aerospace sites or at the airport.
What it's like in the evening
Calm. A handful of restaurants on avenue du Maréchal-Joffre - Le Saint-Aug, Café du Stade, a couple of Italian, a Vietnamese. The neighborhood Italian, the bistrot du coin. For real evening life - bars, restaurants, theatres - residents take the tram to the centre (10-12 minutes). By 11 PM Saint-Augustin is asleep. Match days at the Stade Chaban-Delmas (or Matmut Atlantique, the newer larger stadium to the north) bring temporary crowds.
Getting around
Excellent. The tram line A stops at Saint-Augustin, Saint-Bruno - Hôtel de Région and Stade Chaban-Delmas - connecting in 10-12 minutes to Hôtel de Ville and the centre. Buses fill the cross-district routes. Cycling is excellent - flat streets, good cycle infrastructure. The Parc Bordelais is a 10-minute walk. Driving and parking are paid but easier than central Bordeaux.
Eating and shopping
Solid neighborhood choice. Carrefour Market, Monoprix, the Saturday market on place de l'Église. Bakeries (Boulangerie Roy, Maison Pichard) are local favourites. Restaurants: Le Saint-Aug, Café du Stade, La Carmine, Restaurant Saint-Augustin. The Parc Bordelais has a small café. For wider choice you walk to Triangle d'Or or take the tram. The Marché des Capucins is a short tram ride away for proper food shopping.
When NOT to pick
Saint-Augustin if you want city life on your doorstep - this is a residential pocket. Saint-Augustin if you want a wide range of restaurants and bars locally - the choice is small. Saint-Augustin if you want a young, mixed, international scene - the population is more middle-class-Bordelais-family. Saint-Augustin if you're match-day-noise sensitive and live near the Stade Chaban-Delmas - the crowds and noise on rugby and football match days are real. For middle-class families and professionals who want a calm street, échoppe charm, quick tram access to the centre, and the Parc Bordelais on the doorstep, Saint-Augustin is one of Bordeaux's most underrated practical choices.
