The eastern district that used to be its own town: a small historic core, large modern estates and the Vistula at the edge.
Fordon was an independent town until 1973, when it was absorbed into Bydgoszcz, and it still feels like one. It sits at the eastern edge of the city by the Vistula, with a small old core at Stary Fordon and large planned estates built around it in the decades after incorporation.
What it is
Two things at once. Stary Fordon is the old town centre, low buildings, a church, a river frontage, quiet and pleasant. Around and above it are the modern estates, blocks of flats built from the seventies onwards with schools, shops and services planned in, spread over a large area.
The Vistula and the wooded escarpment give the district more landscape than most of Bydgoszcz.
Who lives here
Families in very large numbers, across generations, plus students at the university campus nearby. It is the most self-contained district in the city: many residents rarely go into the centre.
What it's like during the day
Calm and domestic. The estates have their own shopping centres and services and a lot of green space. Stary Fordon is quiet and has the best of the scenery, by the river.
What it's like in the evening
Residential. Neighbourhood bars and some restaurants, and otherwise quiet. For a night out you travel into the centre, which takes a while.
Getting around
This is the main consideration. Fordon is a long way east and is served by buses along the main road rather than by tram, so the journey into the centre is slower than the map suggests. Check the specific stop and the line before choosing a flat. Within the district everything is close.
Eating and shopping
Local shopping centres and supermarkets cover everything at low prices. Restaurants are neighbourhood places.
When NOT to pick it
If you work or study in the centre and want a short commute, because the distance is real and the buses take time. If you want city life. It is the right choice if you want space, greenery and low rent, and either work locally or do not mind the journey.
