A peripheral western district of Catania, a major stop on the Metropolitana line. Postwar housing, the Garibaldi-Nesima hospital, very low rents, and a direct 15-minute metro ride to the centre.

Nesima is a peripheral district in western Catania, a major stop on the Metropolitana di Catania line (the FCE underground/surface light rail). It was the western terminus from 2017 until the line was extended two stops to Monte Po in 2024. The neighborhood developed in the second half of the 20th century as Catania expanded westward to absorb migration from the rural Etna foothills and from the demolished half of San Berillo. Today Nesima is a residential-and-services area with the major advantage of direct metro access.

What it is

A grid of 6-12 storey postwar apartment buildings and some older village houses, with schools, parishes, the Ospedale Garibaldi-Nesima (a major public hospital), the metro station, and small commercial strips. The neighborhood is bordered by the Strada Statale 121 and the Tangenziale.

Who lives here

Working-class Catanian families, medical workers linked to Garibaldi-Nesima, retired industrial workers, an immigrant community, and a growing share of younger families and students attracted by low rents and direct metro access. Some short-term renters near the hospital.

What it's like during the day

The hospital generates steady flows. School runs, the morning commute toward the centre via metro, the local market on certain mornings. Bars, alimentari, and small shops on the main streets.

What it's like in the evening

Quiet. A handful of pizzerie and trattorie serve dinner; for evening life residents take the metro to the centre. Some streets stay underlit at night.

Getting around

The major advantage is the Metropolitana: Nesima is a major station near the western end of the line, with direct service to Stesicoro (the metro stop nearest Piazza Duomo) in 12-15 minutes, running every 10-15 minutes. AMTS buses also serve the area. The hospital is on the metro line.

Eating and shopping

Local bakeries, fruttivendoli, macellerie. Conad, Lidl, Eurospin. Family pizzerie and trattorie with Catanian cooking - cipolline, arancini, pasta alla Norma. The Saturday morning mercatino is a neighborhood fixture.

When NOT to pick it

If you want centre, walkable old town: Nesima is 12-15 minutes by metro. If you want a polished neighborhood character: this is plain working-class periphery. If you want diverse evening options: choose elsewhere.

Nesima is the right pick if you want very low rent, direct metro access to Stesicoro and the centre, and you're a student, worker, or medical staff member who doesn't need to live in central Catania.
