Florence's historic core, the only quartiere the Arno crosses - the dense, touristic, monumental centre, with quieter resident pockets in the Oltrarno (San Frediano, Santo Spirito) and around Sant'Ambrogio.

Quartiere 1 is Florence's historic centre - the UNESCO core and the only one of the city's five quartieri that the Arno actually crosses. It stretches from the Duomo and Piazza della Signoria on the right bank to the Oltrarno on the left, taking in the rioni of Duomo, San Lorenzo, Santa Croce, Sant'Ambrogio, San Niccolò, Santo Spirito and San Frediano, plus the green of the Cascine and Boboli. It's the densest, most touristic part of the city - but it also still has corners where Florentines live, shop and argue over coffee.

The landmarks are the reason millions come: the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (begun 1296 to Arnolfo di Cambio's Gothic design, crowned by Brunelleschi's dome of 1420-1436, still the largest masonry vault in the world); Piazza della Signoria with Palazzo Vecchio; the Uffizi galleries along the Arno; the Ponte Vecchio with its goldsmiths; Santa Croce with its tombs and Franciscan basilica; and San Lorenzo beside the iron-and-glass Mercato Centrale (Giuseppe Mengoni, opened 1874). Across the river the Oltrarno keeps a more lived-in feel - Borgo San Frediano is one of its most characterful streets, running to the medieval Porta San Frediano (built 1332-1334, attributed to Andrea Pisano).

Who lives here

Heritage Florentines in the piano nobile floors above the shops, artigiani whose workshops are on the ground floor, young professionals and students renting smaller flats, a steady share of foreign residents (older expat community, study-abroad students), and an ever-growing layer of short-stay tourism that squeezes the long-term rental stock.

What it's like during the day

Busy and crowded. Tour groups move between the Duomo, the Uffizi and Ponte Vecchio, while the morning food markets - the Mercato Centrale in San Lorenzo and the Mercato di Sant'Ambrogio - keep a genuinely local rhythm. The Oltrarno workshops open around 9 (leather, frames, ceramics); Sant'Ambrogio and San Frediano feel most like a neighbourhood rather than a film set.

What it's like in the evening

The city's nightlife hub. Piazza Santo Spirito and the streets of San Frediano fill from aperitivo onward, the Lungarni draw crowds at sunset, and the central piazzas stay lively late. It's atmospheric - and loud: Friday to Sunday the Oltrarno and Sant'Ambrogio go on until the early hours.

Getting around

Mostly on foot - much of the centre is pedestrian or ZTL (limited-traffic zone, residents only). Ponte Vecchio, Ponte alla Carraia and Ponte alle Grazie link the two banks. Santa Maria Novella (SMN), the main station, sits on the western edge; tram lines T1 and T2 stop nearby. Within the centre buses are slow - walking is faster.

Eating and shopping

Everything from tourist traps to serious trattorie. The two historic markets sell fresh; San Lorenzo's stalls handle leather and souvenirs; the Oltrarno keeps the real artisan workshops. Sant'Ambrogio is the locals' market quarter for produce and good-value eating; San Frediano and Santo Spirito hold the wine bars and forni.

When NOT to pick it

If you want quiet: the centre is busy by day and loud at the weekend, especially the Oltrarno. If you want budget: rents here are among the city's highest, and short-stay competition keeps long lets scarce. If you dislike crowds and ZTL parking rules, this is not your quartiere.

Quartiere 1 is the right pick if you want to live inside Florence's history - walking to the Duomo, markets at your door, and the choice between the monumental right bank and the more lived-in Oltrarno and Sant'Ambrogio corners.
