A planned residential district built in the 1950s on a former island in the Arno (isolotto = little island), as social housing for working families. Green, calm, suburban in feel.

Isolotto means "little island" - the original Isolotto dell'Argingrosso was a piece of land between two channels of the Arno. In the early 1950s the city built planned social housing here on principles inspired by the Modern Movement: low-rise blocks separated by green space, community services woven in, churches and schools at the centre. The result is calm, surprisingly green, and very different from central Florence.

Who lives here

Working-class Florentine families (often the original tenants' children and grandchildren), retirees, recent immigrants, young couples buying first apartments here for the affordability. Less student or expat presence than the centre.

What it's like during the day

Suburban. Children walk to local schools, retirees walk in the Parco dell'Argingrosso (the big riverside park), shops along Via dei Bassi serve daily needs. The Chiesa dell'Isolotto has been a centre of community life - its parish priest from 1954 to 1968, Don Enzo Mazzi, was a prominent figure of progressive Catholic dissent, removed from the parish in 1968.

What it's like in the evening

Quiet. A few local trattorie and pizzerie. Residents head to San Frediano or central Florence for nightlife. Streets are settled by 10.

Getting around

Tramvia T1 runs through Isolotto - fastest connection to SMN (10 minutes). Buses 6, 17, 80 also serve the area. Cycling is flat and easy.

Eating and shopping

Local. Coop and Esselunga supermarkets, neighborhood markets twice weekly, family-run restaurants, piadinerie. For variety, take the tram to the centre.

When NOT to pick it

If you want walking distance to Duomo: Isolotto is 20-30 minutes by tram. If you want centre-life energy: too residential. If you want historic atmosphere: this is 1950s planning. If you want vibrant nightlife: not here.

Isolotto is the right pick if you want affordable rooms in a calm residential district with good tram access, parks for daily walks, and a real working-Florence family neighborhood feel.
