Living in Nordend, Frankfurt
WG-Zimmer Living in Nordend, Frankfurt - direkt von privat, ohne Makler - Frankfurt
The eastern half of the Nordend, between Friedberger Landstraße and Bornheim, with Wilhelminian Altbau on quiet streets, the Bethmannpark with its Chinese garden, and a residential rhythm that is even calmer than Nordend West.
Nordend Ost is the eastern half of the Nordend, separated from Nordend West by the Friedberger Landstraße heading north from Konstablerwache toward Friedberg. Building stock is essentially identical - Wilhelminian Altbau, four-storey Gründerzeit apartment buildings, stucco façades, bay windows, inner courtyards - but the rhythm is even calmer. The eastern edge slips into Bornheim along Saalburgallee; the northern edge runs out into post-war suburban housing.
Who lives here
Solidly middle-class, family-leaning, long-settled. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, civil servants, journalists, architects, university staff. A strong family component, with children walking themselves to the local Gymnasium. Older Frankfurters in long-held apartments. Foreign residents are well represented and tend to stay for years - embassies and consulates are further west in the Westend, but professionals in finance, medicine and consulting are common. Less student presence than Bockenheim, less corporate churn than Westend.
What it's like during the day
Trees, generous sidewalks, small squares with playgrounds. The Bethmannpark, with its small Chinesischer Garten (the Garten des Himmlischen Friedens, a Chinese garden the city laid out in the 1980s on the former Bethmann family estate), sits in the south of the district and is one of Frankfurt's quieter parks. The Hessendenkmal park sits further east toward Bornheim. Sandweg is the most commercial street - neighbourhood bakeries, butchers, a small Saturday market on Friedberger Platz on the boundary with Nordend West, design and second-hand shops. The Berger Straße of Bornheim is a ten-minute walk east.
What it's like in the evening
Quiet by Frankfurt standards. A handful of bars and restaurants on Sandweg, Burgstraße and the southern edge along Lange Straße. The Friday evening market on Friedberger Platz turns into Frankfurt's most beloved open-air aperitif - half farmers, half neighbourhood meet-up, ending around 9 PM. For real nightlife you walk south to the centre or east to Berger Straße.
Getting around
U-Bahn line U4 stops at Merianplatz and Höhenstraße; U5 stops at Musterschule and Glauburgstraße. Trams 12, 14 and 18 cross the southern edge along Friedberger Landstraße. Konstablerwache (S-Bahn interchange) is ten minutes by U-Bahn. The Berger Straße of Bornheim is ten minutes' walk. Cycling is easy - flat, well-marked lanes throughout.
Eating and shopping
The Friedberger-Platz Friday market is the social anchor - twenty stalls of farm produce, plus food and wine vendors that turn the square into an aperitif venue. For groceries: Rewe and Edeka on Sandweg and Friedberger Landstraße. Bakeries are old-school. Restaurants on Sandweg cover Italian, Turkish, Vietnamese; for Apfelwein taverns the closest are in Bornheim and Sachsenhausen. Berger Straße in Bornheim is within ten minutes' walk for the wider choice.
When NOT to pick it
If your budget is tight, Nordend Ost is among the more expensive residential districts. If you want a busy high street outside your door, Sandweg is calmer than Berger Straße or Oeder Weg. If you want modern apartments with lifts and good heating, the Altbau stock often lacks both. If you want a lively nightlife scene within walking distance, the rhythm here is quiet by 11 PM.
Nordend Ost is the right pick if you want classic Frankfurt Altbau on the quietest possible streets, the Bethmannpark and Friedberger Platz as your anchors, a fifteen-minute commute to the financial district and a long-term residential rhythm. Many Frankfurt families consider it the most liveable address - the village calm of Bornheim with the Altbau of Westend.
