Nowy Port sits at the mouth of the Martwa Wisła, where the port meets the sea. It grew in the nineteenth century as a harbour settlement and kept that character: brick tenements, dock infrastructure, a lighthouse, and a working port that is still very much in operation. It has had a difficult reputation for decades and it has some of the cheapest rents in Gdańsk.
What it is
A compact district of nineteenth and early twentieth century tenements around the harbour, mixed with post-war blocks and industrial land. The lighthouse and the old fort are landmarks, and the ferry across the water to Westerplatte runs from here.
Parts of the district have been renovated, others clearly have not, and the contrast is sharper here than anywhere else in the city.
Who lives here
A long-established working-class population, with a slowly growing number of people attracted by the low rents and the location, including artists and students. It is one of the few districts in Gdańsk where the social mix is genuinely narrow.
What it's like during the day
Ordinary and a bit worn. Local shops, the harbour traffic, people going about their business. The waterfront is interesting rather than pretty, and the industrial edge is close at hand. There is a beach at the northern end.
What it's like in the evening
Quiet, and the district has a reputation that makes some people cautious after dark. As always, this varies street by street and is worth judging in person rather than by hearsay.
Getting around
Trams connect to Wrzeszcz and the centre. There is no SKM station here, so journeys are slower than from the districts along the railway. The port and its traffic shape the road layout.
Eating and shopping
Basic. Local shops and small supermarkets cover daily needs; for anything more you travel. Prices are low.
When NOT to pick it
If you want convenience, choice or a polished neighbourhood. Transport is slower than in the railway districts, services are thin and the district is uneven. It is the right choice if the rent is the deciding factor and you want somewhere with genuine character rather than a comfortable one.
