The neighborhood is one of Genoa's most stable bourgeois addresses - heritage flats with port views, broad streets after the medieval mess, and steps down to the caruggi.
Who lives here
Heritage-flat Genoese families (multi-generational), professionals (lawyers, notaries, doctors), retirees in 19th-century buildings, embassies and consulates, occasional academics. Less student presence than central caruggi - Carignano attracts established professionals.

Walking down to the Centro Storico is the everyday route - Salita Pollaiuoli and other staircases connect Carignano to Piazza Banchi in 5-10 minutes. Buses 35, 36 climb the hill from De Ferrari. Metro De Ferrari is a 10-minute walk down.

Higher-end Genoese. Le Cantine Squarciafico for traditional, Ô Magazin wine bar, neighborhood trattorie. The Mercato del Carmine and Mercato Orientale are 10-15 minutes' walk (or downhill steps).
When NOT to pick it
If you want budget: Carignano's rents reflect its desirability. If you want street-level caruggi atmosphere: this is hilltop bourgeois, not alley density. If you want vibrant nightlife: head down to the caruggi or Piazza delle Erbe.
