The dense, working port-side quartiere west of Stazione Principe - Sampierdarena, San Teodoro and Campasso - once an industrial town in its own right, with liberty-era streets, Villa Scassi park, and its own mainline station.

Sampierdarena is the heart of Centro Ovest, the borough west of Stazione Principe, together with San Teodoro and Campasso. Sampierdarena was an independent town until it was absorbed into Genoa in 1926, growing on the back of the port and heavy industry into one of the city's most populous quarters. Today it's dense and working-class, with liberty-era buildings along streets like Via Daste and Via Cantore, the green of the Parco di Villa Scassi climbing the hillside, and the port right alongside.

Who lives here

Working-class Genoese families, a large and long-established immigrant community, retirees, and students and young renters drawn by some of the lowest rents in central Genoa. Less bourgeois than the eastern quartieri, more mixed and lived-in - Sampierdarena has its own strong local identity.

What it's like during the day

Busy and commercial. Via Daste, the pedestrianized heart of old Sampierdarena, is lined with shops and liberty facades; Piazza Vittorio Veneto and Via Buranello are everyday hubs. Daily-life markets, the port and rail infrastructure framing the neighborhood, and Villa Scassi park as the green escape on the slope above.

What it's like in the evening

Local and unpretentious - trattorie, pizzerie, ethnic eateries and neighborhood bars rather than a nightlife scene. Quieter once shops close. For a bigger night out, the caruggi and Piazza delle Erbe are a short train or bus ride east through Principe.

Getting around

Well connected. Stazione di Genova Sampierdarena is the city's third railway station, with frequent urban trains reaching Principe in about 6 minutes and the coastal line running west to Voltri and east to Nervi. Plenty of AMT bus lines link Sampierdarena to the centre, and the Brin-Brignole metro is reachable from Principe or Dinegro just to the east. A public lift connects the lower streets to Villa Scassi on the hill above.

Eating and shopping

Affordable and varied. Daily markets, neighborhood trattorie and pizzerie, bakeries and a wide range of international food shops reflecting the local mix. Everyday supermarkets are easy to find; for more choice, the Mercato Orientale is a short hop east via Principe.

When NOT to pick it

If you want a polished bourgeois address: this is dense, port-side and working-class, not heritage-flat elegance. If you want to walk to the Centro Storico: the caruggi are east past Principe, a short ride rather than a stroll. If you want the seafront promenade: Corso Italia is on the far eastern side of the city.

Centro Ovest is the right pick if you want the lowest central rents, a genuine working Genoese quarter with its own identity, a mainline station on your doorstep, and quick rail and bus links into the centre.
