Two adjoining areas of the municipality of Oeiras, at Lisbon's western edge on the Tagus: convenient, well connected by the Linha de Cascais and more affordable than the center.
Algés and Linda-a-Velha are two adjoining areas of the municipality of Oeiras, at the western edge of the Lisbon area, just past Belém. Together with Cruz Quebrada-Dafundo they form a single União de Freguesias facing the Tagus. Algés is the riverside part, with the Jardim Municipal de Algés and the passeio marítimo; Linda-a-Velha is more inland and residential, on the hill. It's the first metropolitan belt attached to the city: convenient, well connected and generally more affordable than the center.
Who lives here
Portuguese middle-class families, many commuters who work in Lisbon, the occasional student and foreign worker looking for a quiet, well-connected base without paying center prices. Few tourists: this is an area of everyday life, not a postcard.
What it's like during the day
A normal, orderly neighborhood pace. Algés has the passeio marítimo along the Tagus, great for walking or running, and the Jardim Municipal as its reference green space. Linda-a-Velha is made of residential streets, schools, small shops. The Miraflores area, between the two, concentrates offices and services.
What it's like in the evening
Quiet. A few restaurants and bars, mostly in Miraflores and around the Algés station, but no real nightlife. For nightlife you move toward central Lisbon, which is close. In summer the passeio marítimo hosts events and concerts (the NOS Alive festival is held right here).
Getting around
Algés is a terminus: the CP's Linha de Cascais stops here (trains from Cais do Sodré via Santos, Alcântara-Mar and Belém) and it's also the terminus of the 15E eléctrico, which runs from Praça da Figueira through Belém. Check the train timetables: the line has had partial suspensions for modernization works. Linda-a-Velha relies on Carris Metropolitana buses, very frequent toward Algés and Lisbon.
Eating and shopping
For shopping there are Pingo Doce and Continente, plus markets and small shops. For eating, mostly in Miraflores: sushi, pizzerias, international and everyday Portuguese cooking, at more reasonable prices than the center.
When NOT to pick it
If you want to live inside historic Lisbon, on foot from Chiado or Bairro Alto: here you're on the outskirts, depending on the train or the bus. If you're after nightlife under your building: the evening is dead. If you expect the charm of old lanes: this is a modern, functional area, not picturesque.
Algés and Linda-a-Velha are the right pick if you want a convenient, well-connected spot near the river, a few minutes from the center but quieter and more affordable.
