Living in Bellecour, Lyon

Colocation Living in Bellecour, Lyon - chambre à louer entre particuliers, sans agence - Lyon

The great central square of Lyon and the symbolic centre of the city. Métro lines A and D cross under the square, the statue of Louis XIV on horseback anchors the middle, and the surrounding streets concentrate the city's most expensive central housing.

Bellecour is the great central square of Lyon - the third-largest square in France and the largest pedestrian square in Europe - and one of the major identity markers of the city. The square itself is 312 metres by 200 metres, paved in sand-coloured gravel, with the equestrian statue of Louis XIV by Lemot at its centre and the Office de Tourisme in the southeastern pavilion. The surrounding quartier covers the southern half of the Presqu'île's 2e Arrondissement, running from the square south toward Ainay and east-west between the Rhône and the Saône.

Who lives here

A bourgeois and professional population. Senior executives in the central financial and legal offices, doctors with consulting rooms on Rue Émile Zola and Rue de Brest, lawyers, a few notaries' family residences in the grand Haussmann-era buildings overlooking the square. Some empty-nester families who have stayed in their appartements bourgeois after the children left. A growing number of short-term and corporate rentals. Few low-income residents - prices on the square itself are among the highest in Lyon.

What it's like during the day

The square is a major civic centre and meeting point. From early morning the terrasses of the cafés on the north side fill up, and the pedestrian Rue de la République running north from the square is one of the busiest shopping streets in the city. The southern Place Bellecour hosts seasonal events - the grande roue in summer and at Christmas, the Fête des Lumières installations in December, occasional concerts and political demonstrations. The Office de Tourisme on the southeast corner is busy with tourists year-round.

What it's like in the evening

Lively and elegant. Bars and brasseries on Place Bellecour and Rue de la République stay open until midnight or 1 AM. The atmosphere is more upscale than Cordeliers to the north, with a slightly older crowd. Restaurants on Rue des Marronniers and Rue du Plâtre concentrate traditional and modern Lyonnais cuisine. The central square is brightly lit through the night and feels safe to cross.

Getting around

Bellecour is the main interchange of the Lyon Métro: line A runs east-west (toward Perrache and Vaulx-en-Velin), line D runs north-south (toward Gare de Vaise and Vénissieux). Walking distance to Cordeliers (north), Ainay (south), Vieux Lyon (across the Saône, west), and the Préfecture and Rhône embankment (east). Numerous bus lines stop on the square. Cycling is easy along the Rhône and Saône berges.

Eating and shopping

Rue de la République concentrates large brand stores, bookshops (the historic Decitre on Place Bellecour), department stores (Printemps), and chain restaurants. Side streets - Rue du Plâtre, Rue Mercière (a block north), Rue des Marronniers - have smaller bistros, bouchons and modern restaurants. Supermarkets are limited but present (Carrefour City, Monoprix). Boulangeries and fromageries are excellent. For fresh produce, the Marché Saint-Antoine runs most mornings (every day except Monday) on the Quai Saint-Antoine, three minutes west.

When NOT to pick it

If you want value for money - Bellecour and the surrounding streets command among the highest rents in Lyon, often without proportionate apartment quality. If you want quiet evenings with neighbourhood feel - the square has constant flow, frequent events, and the atmosphere is more "central business district" than "neighbourhood community". If you want green space - the nearest serious park (Parc de la Tête d'Or) is fifteen minutes by Métro. Bellecour is at its best for people who want maximum centrality, the convenience of two intersecting Métro lines, and the prestige of a Haussmann-style apartment overlooking one of Europe's great squares - and who accept the premium and the bustle that come with it.
