Living in the Pentes de la Croix-Rousse, Lyon

Colocation Living in the Pentes de la Croix-Rousse, Lyon - chambre à louer entre particuliers, sans agence - Lyon

The steep silk-weaver slopes of the 1er Arrondissement. Tall canut buildings with high ceilings (originally to fit silk looms), traboules cutting between streets, and a bohemian, alternative identity that runs deep.

The Pentes de la Croix-Rousse are the steep slopes that climb from the Place des Terreaux up to the Croix-Rousse plateau, on the right flank of the 1er Arrondissement. The quartier was built in the early nineteenth century to house the canuts - Lyon's silk weavers - whose distinctive looms (the métier à tisser Jacquard) required apartments with very high ceilings, and whose buildings have those tall windows and dense traboules - covered passageways between streets - that allowed weavers to move bolts of silk between workshops without exposing them to weather or theft. The silk weavers' uprisings of 1831 and 1834 began here, and the quartier has retained a rebelle and bohemian identity ever since.

Who lives here

A bohemian and mixed population. Students, artists, designers, artisans, musicians, writers, journalists, architects. A long-established LGBTQ community, especially around Rue Sainte-Catherine and Rue Burdeau. Younger Lyonnais families who chose the quartier for its character and accept the climb. A remaining layer of working-class and lower-middle-class residents in the older buildings, often in rent-stabilised apartments. A growing layer of upper-middle-class arrivals attracted by the character - but the quartier has resisted gentrification more than most.

What it's like during the day

Quiet daily life punctuated by visitors. The montées - the steep staircases - and the traboules are open to pedestrians and bring a steady flow of curious walkers throughout the year. Small ateliers (workshops) of designers, leather workers, printers, bookbinders and small publishers fill the ground floors of the canut buildings. The Place du Forez, Place Sathonay (with the Mairie du 1er Arrondissement), Place des Tapis and Place Bellevue are the main quartier centres, each with cafés and small markets. The Sunday Marché de la Création runs on the Quai Romain Rolland by the Saône, a five-minute walk down the slope.

What it's like in the evening

Lively, alternative, and consistently the best concentration of bars in Lyon. Rue Sainte-Catherine, Rue Burdeau, Rue Bouteille and the surrounding streets fill from 7 PM with a notably mixed crowd. The LGBTQ scene is centred on Rue Sainte-Catherine. Live music - jazz, electronic, folk - is hosted in dozens of small venues. Bars à vins, bars à bières, cafés-concerts anchor the night. The bar culture runs until 1 or 2 AM, then quiets - most apartments are above bars, and noise complaints have shaped closing times.

Getting around

Métro line C stops at Croix-Rousse (top of the slope) and Hénon (north of the plateau), connecting south to Hôtel de Ville on Métro A. Métro line A is accessed from Hôtel de Ville - Louis Pradel at the base of the slope. The Pentes themselves are walked - the climbs and descents are the quartier's daily rhythm. Several bus lines climb the slope, including the bus line C13. Cycling up is difficult without an e-bike; descending is easy but the cobblestones and stairs limit routes. Most residents accept walking as the default.

Eating and shopping

The food scene is diverse and unpretentious. Modern bistros, bars à vins, vegetarian and vegan restaurants, ethnic addresses (Lebanese, Ethiopian, Thai, Vietnamese), and a handful of excellent traditional bouchons along Rue Burdeau. Independent shops - second-hand book and vinyl stores, design boutiques, épiceries fines - line Rue Burdeau and Rue Sainte-Catherine. Supermarkets are limited and small (Casino, Carrefour City); the Marché de la Croix-Rousse on the Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse at the top of the slope handles fresh produce six mornings a week. Boulangeries and fromageries are excellent.

When NOT to pick it

If you have any mobility issues - the slope is steep, the stairs are everywhere, and many buildings have many floors with no lift. If you want quiet - the bar scene is the quartier's defining feature, and apartments above bars are common. If you want modern apartments - most are nineteenth-century with high ceilings, old plumbing and variable insulation. If you want family-friendly flat streets - the Pentes are better suited to singles, couples and older children who can manage the climb. The Pentes are at their best for people who want the most characterful, alternative, lived-in quartier in Lyon - with the best bars, the densest ateliers, the steepest streets, and the strongest identity.
