A neighborhood built around one of the largest hospitals in the south of France, with the medical faculty next door and the metro that takes you downtown in a few minutes.

La Timone is one of those neighborhoods with a crystal-clear identity: it revolves around the Hôpital de la Timone, the most important university hospital center in the region and one of the largest in the south of France. Next to it stands the medical faculty of Aix-Marseille Université. The result is a neighborhood east of the center where life flows to the rhythm of those clocking in and out of shifts, and where a good part of those looking for housing are healthcare staff or students.

Who lives here

A great many medical and nursing students, residents-in-training, nurses and hospital staff who want to live a stone's throw from their workplace or their lecture halls. To this core is added a historic resident population, Marseillais and mixed, which gives the neighborhood an ordinary, untouristy character. It's a practical environment, used to staggered hours: cohabitation between young people who study and work in the hospital is the norm.

What it's like during the day

By day La Timone is lively and functional. The comings and goings around the hospital and the boulevard Jean-Moulin fill the sidewalks, cafés and bakeries. It's a neighborhood of services: pharmacies, copy shops, small easygoing restaurants designed for those with half an hour's break. Don't expect boutiques or postcard scenery: here practicality dominates, and that translates into everything you need within reach.

What it's like in the evening

In the evening the pace drops, but doesn't switch off entirely: with a hospital open 24 hours, there's always a minimum of movement. The evening offering remains essential, though, made of a few bars and unpretentious restaurants. Anyone looking for nightlife moves toward the center, reachable in a few minutes by metro. La Timone is more a neighborhood you come home to rest in than one where you stay out late.

Getting around

Here lies one of the strong points. The La Timone station is on the M1 metro line (the branch that runs from La Rose to La Fourragère). From here you reach the Vieux-Port, in the heart of Marseille, in about 8 minutes, and the great Saint-Charles railway station on a single direct line. The next stop is La Blancarde, a major tram and train hub. With the metro on your doorstep, La Timone is in fact very central despite its eastern position.

Eating and shopping

The offering is the concrete kind of a lived-in neighborhood: supermarkets, bakeries, greengrocers and small grocers for everyday shopping, plus a good choice of places to eat quickly and well, from the kebab to North African cuisine to the passing bistro. It's everyday cooking more than a gastronomic destination, but it covers every need without having to take the metro.

When NOT to pick it

If you're looking for charm, silence or a historic-center atmosphere, La Timone isn't for you: it's a neighborhood dominated, visually and acoustically, by the bulk of the hospital, with traffic, sirens and architecture that's functional more than beautiful. Anyone who needs absolute quiet or a rich evening life will do better elsewhere. But if you study or work in healthcare, or simply want a practical, well-connected neighborhood, here you're in the right place.
