Living in L'Estaque, Marseille

A fishing village by the sea in the north of Marseille, immortalized by Cézanne and Braque, famous for chichis and panisses: L'Estaque is a Marseille apart, out of time.

At the northwestern tip of Marseille, in the 16th arrondissement, L'Estaque is an old fishing village that over time became a working-class town and a holiday spot. Its seascapes inspired Cézanne, Braque and Renoir between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and even today the neighborhood keeps a picturesque charm, light-years from the city center. It's also a delicious place, famous for fried chichis and chickpea panisses.

Who lives here

L'Estaque has a strong, working-class identity, that of a true village within the city. It's home to Marseillais tied to the neighborhood's roots, long-established families and those seeking a corner of the sea with character, far from the bustle of the center. It's a close-knit community, proud of its history of fishermen and painters. Those who choose L'Estaque do so for the authentic and slightly timeless atmosphere, accepting the distance from the heart of Marseille.

What it's like during the day

By day the little port is the center of everything: the fishermen's boats, the walks along the shore, the stalls where you buy chichis and panisses freshly fried. There's the air of a seafaring village, with houses facing the water and the hills behind, the same views the Cubist painters made famous. It's a neighborhood made to be experienced on foot, at a leisurely pace, between the sea and Mediterranean light.

What it's like in the evening

In the evening L'Estaque stays quiet and cozy, faithful to its village spirit. Around the port there are restaurants and stalls where you can eat fish or street food with a view over the water, but it's not a nightlife area: anyone looking for venues until late has to move toward the center. The typical evening is simple, that of a seaside village, with the port lit up and the sound of the waves.

Getting around

L'Estaque has no metro, but it's one of the few neighborhoods in Marseille connected by train: the gare de l'Estaque, on the TER line, lets you reach the central Saint-Charles station in a few minutes, a precious advantage given the distance. The neighborhood is also served by several RTM bus lines (including the 35, the 36 and the 95). In addition, in the warm season (roughly from late April to late September) the RTM navette maritime runs, connecting L'Estaque to the Vieux-Port by sea: an evocative trip, but seasonal, to be considered an extra and not a means for all year.

Eating and shopping

L'Estaque is famous for its street food: chichis, long fried sweets, and chickpea-flour panisses are an institution of the neighborhood and are bought right on the port. For seafood cuisine there are restaurants overlooking the water, while for everyday shopping the village has convenience shops and supermarkets that cover the routine. It's a place where eating well is part of the local identity.

When NOT to pick it

L'Estaque isn't for you if you need the center nearby and quick, flexible travel: even with the train, you're still far away and depend on TER and bus timetables, with the sea shuttle only in summer. If you're looking for nightlife, services at every corner and the energy of a central neighborhood, here you'll feel isolated, especially out of season. It's a place for those who love the sea, authenticity and a slow pace, not for those who want everything within reach.

For those looking for a different Marseille, made of port, painting and street food, L'Estaque offers a seaside village that seems to belong to another era.
