Living in San Ferdinando, Naples
Affitto stanza singola tra privati Living in San Ferdinando, Naples - senza agenzia - Naples
The royal-elegant heart of central Naples - Palazzo Reale, Piazza del Plebiscito, Galleria Umberto I, Teatro San Carlo. The official-administrative core.
San Ferdinando is the official-elegant heart of central Naples. The Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace, residence of the Bourbons), Piazza del Plebiscito (the great open semicircle), the Galleria Umberto I (1890 iron-and-glass mall, the Neapolitan twin of Milan's Vittorio Emanuele), and the Teatro San Carlo (1737, Europe's oldest continuously operating opera house) anchor the neighborhood.
Who lives here
Few residents - San Ferdinando is mostly institutional, commercial, hotel-tourist. The few who do live here are professionals, residents of heritage flats above the Galleria, hotel-related workers. More transient than residential.
What it's like during the day
Crowded. Tourists circulate around Piazza Plebiscito and the Palazzo Reale, students between Teatro San Carlo and the Conservatorio, opera-goers, hotel guests. Galleria Umberto fills with shoppers. The Caffè Gambrinus (founded 1860) opens to Piazza Trieste e Trento.
What it's like in the evening
Theater-and-dining. Teatro San Carlo performances bring elegant crowds. Gambrinus stays open late. Surrounding trattorie serve pre/post-theatre dinners. Less piazza nightlife than Centro Storico - San Ferdinando is more refined.
Getting around
Metro Linea 1 (Toledo), Linea 2 nearby. Walking distance to Centro Storico (5-10 minutes), Chiaia (10 minutes), Stazione Centrale (15 minutes by metro).
Eating and shopping
Gran Caffè Gambrinus (institution, sfogliatelle and coffee), Brandi (claimed inventor of pizza Margherita), Trattoria Da Nennella nearby, the Galleria Umberto shops. Pasticceria Scaturchio a few blocks away.
When NOT to pick it
If you want vibrant residential street life: San Ferdinando is institutional. If you want quiet residential streets: tourist saturation is constant. If you want budget: the few available rentals charge centre premium.
San Ferdinando is the right pick if you want to live next to Palazzo Reale and the opera, in a heritage flat above the Galleria Umberto, and don't mind tourist-density during the day.
