Living in Vomero, Naples
Affitto stanza singola tra privati Living in Vomero, Naples - senza agenzia - Naples
Naples's bourgeois hilltop neighbourhood reached by three funiculars, with Via Scarlatti as the main commercial spine, Castel Sant'Elmo and the Certosa di San Martino above.
Vomero sits on the hill 250m above the rest of Naples, reached by three funiculars (Centrale, Chiaia, Montesanto). It's the bourgeois alternative to Chiaia - built mostly in the early 20th century with broader avenues, liberty buildings, and the dominant landmark of Castel Sant'Elmo (medieval fortress) and the Certosa di San Martino (monastery, now museum). The views over the bay are spectacular.
Who lives here
Middle-class to upper-middle Neapolitan families, professionals, university faculty, retirees in heritage flats, a smaller share of students who don't mind the funicular commute. Stable population - Vomero has resisted big gentrification waves.
What it's like during the day
Calmer than the lower city. Via Scarlatti and Via Luca Giordano are the pedestrianized commercial spines - shops, banks, schools, cafés. Piazza Vanvitelli is the social centre. Children walk to schools, retirees gather at the historic cafés. Castel Sant'Elmo gets tourists during the day.
What it's like in the evening
Lively but civilised. Via Scarlatti fills with passeggiata crowds, aperitivo spots get busy, trattorie open. Less club-scene than the lower city - Vomero is piazza drinking and dinner. Streets settle by midnight.
Getting around
The three funicolari are the lifeblood - Centrale to Augusteo (centre), Chiaia to Piazza Amedeo, Montesanto to the Montesanto hub (Cumana, Metro Linea 2). Metro Linea 1 Vanvitelli station. Buses C28, C32, V1. The hill makes walking up exhausting but down is fine. Many residents drive.
Eating and shopping
A complete shopping district. Vinario wine bar, Antica Friggitoria Vomero, Pizzeria Acunzo (one of Naples's best, less touristy than the centre), Trattoria Vinicola Acquasanta, Pasticceria Bellavia. Mercato Vomero on certain weekdays. Supermarkets Decò, Conad easily accessible.
When NOT to pick it
If you want walking-distance Centro Storico: Vomero is hilltop - you'll funicular or bus. If you want gritty street-life atmosphere: this is more sedate. If you want budget rooms: Vomero rents are second only to Chiaia.
Vomero is the right pick if you want hilltop calm with views over Naples and the bay, a complete bourgeois neighborhood with schools and shops, and the funicular ride down to the city as your daily commute.
