Living in Romagnolo, Palermo
Affitto stanza singola tra privati Living in Romagnolo, Palermo - senza agenzia - Palermo
Southeastern residential Palermo between Brancaccio, the coast and the Oreto, taking in Sperone and the Romagnolo shore. On the tram line 1 between Stazione Centrale and Roccella: postwar housing, very low rents, and a 15-20 minute ride to the centre.
Settecannoli is the residential circoscrizione of southeastern Palermo, running between Brancaccio to the south and west, the Oreto river to the northwest, and the coast to the east. It takes in the Sperone district and the Romagnolo shore as parts of its territory. The name comes from an old fountain with seven cannoli (spouts) that supplied the area. The neighborhood developed mostly in the postwar period as the city expanded southward, and today is a working- and lower-middle-class residential area with the major advantage of the AMAT tram line 1 running through it.
What it is
A grid of 4-8 storey postwar apartment buildings, with some older houses near the Chiesa di San Giovanni dei Lebbrosi - a Norman church begun in 1071 near the Ponte dell'Ammiraglio on the Oreto, one of the oldest medieval buildings in the city. Schools, parishes, the tram stops, small commercial strips along the main streets. The neighborhood is bordered by the coast road and the railway.
Who lives here
Working-class Palermitani families, retired industrial workers, an immigrant community (Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Romanian, Ghanaian), and a growing share of younger families and students attracted by very low rents and direct tram access to the centre. Some short-term renters near the station.
What it's like during the day
Ordinary and active. School runs, the morning commute, the local market on certain mornings. Bars, alimentari, and small shops on the main streets. The tram and bus service generate constant flows.
What it's like in the evening
Quiet. A handful of pizzerie and trattorie serve dinner; for evening life residents take the tram to the centre. Some streets stay underlit at night.
Getting around
The major advantage is tram line 1 (the Roccella-Stazione Centrale line): Settecannoli has stops on it - including Sperone and San Giovanni dei Lebbrosi - with direct service to Palermo Centrale in 15-20 minutes. AMAT buses also serve the area. A car helps for southern Sicily trips.
Eating and shopping
Local bakeries, fruttivendoli, macellerie, halal butchers. Conad, Lidl, Eurospin. Family pizzerie and trattorie with Palermitan cooking. The Sunday morning market is a neighborhood fixture.
When NOT to pick it
If you want centre, walkable old town: Settecannoli is 15-20 minutes by tram. If you want polished neighborhood character: this is plain working-class periphery. If you want diverse evening options: choose elsewhere.
Settecannoli is the right pick if you want very low rent, direct tram access to Palermo Centrale, and you're a student or worker on a budget who doesn't need to be in the centro storico.
