Living in Cronenbourg, Strasbourg

Colocation Living in Cronenbourg, Strasbourg - chambre à louer entre particuliers, sans agence - Strasbourg

The brewery quartier of Strasbourg, north-west of the Grande Île. Home to the historic Kronenbourg brewery, the CNRS research campus, post-war housing blocks, and a residential mix along the Route d'Oberhausbergen.

Cronenbourg is the brewery quartier of Strasbourg, named after the Kronenbourg brewery that has its historic site here - though the main production was moved to nearby Obernai in the 1960s, the brand name and the original buildings remain. The quartier sits north-west of the Grande Île, between Koenigshoffen to the south and Hautepierre to the west. Beyond the brewery, the defining institutions are the CNRS research campus (a major French national scientific research cluster) and the École de Chimie, Polymères et Matériaux (ECPM). The residential fabric is mostly post-war social housing blocks around Place de Haldenbourg and Quai Krimm, with a layer of older brick workers' housing along the eastern edge.

Who lives here

A mixed working-class to lower-middle-class population: long-established Alsatian families, a substantial Maghrebi and Turkish community concentrated in the social-housing blocks, brewery employees (a shrinking but still present community), CNRS researchers and ECPM students, and a layer of young couples and families priced out of the centre. The international research community gives the quartier a thin but real cosmopolitan layer.

What it's like during the day

Active. The Route d'Oberhausbergen and the Avenue de Bischheim carry the main commercial traffic - bakeries, butchers, hardware shops, hairdressers, kebab houses. The CNRS campus draws researchers and students through the day. The Parc du Glacis and the small green strips along the canal provide outdoor space. Schools and the Place de Haldenbourg draw the school rush. The brewery site itself runs a visitor centre (the Musée Européen de la Bière and tours of the historic brasserie).

What it's like in the evening

Quiet. A handful of restaurants - neighbourhood Alsatian winstubs, Turkish grills, a couple of pizzerias - along the Route d'Oberhausbergen fill from 7 PM with locals. No organised nightlife. The bar scene migrates to the centre or to Krutenau.

Getting around

Tram A and D stop at Rotonde, Saint-Florent and Ducs d'Alsace on the eastern edge of the quartier, connecting to Homme de Fer in about 10 minutes. Bus 6 and the C4 cross-town line loop through. Walking to the Grande Île is 25-30 minutes; the train station is 15 minutes by tram. The autoroute access at the Porte de Hagueneau makes car travel easy.

Eating and shopping

Functional and varied. Several supermarkets - Lidl, Aldi, a Carrefour Market - handle daily basics. A dense layer of ethnic small commerce (halal butchers, Maghrebi épiceries, Turkish bakeries) on the Route d'Oberhausbergen. Several good bakeries, a couple of small Alsatian winstubs, and a few mid-range restaurants. No destination dining inside the quartier; for that, residents go to the centre. The closest weekly market is the Marché du Quai Turckheim a short tram ride south.

When NOT to pick it

If you want a quartier with café terraces, a student bar scene or destination shopping, Cronenbourg is the wrong fit - the social rhythm is working-class Alsatian and ethnically diverse, with no organised nightlife. The social-housing blocks around Place de Haldenbourg have had occasional security incidents and the area can feel cut off at night. Apartments are mostly post-war blocks with modest insulation; the western edge is close to the autoroute and to industrial parcels. If you need walking distance to the historic centre or to the EU institutions, Cronenbourg is too far. The quartier is at its best for CNRS researchers, ECPM students, working families and anyone who wants affordable rent and decent tram access without paying centre prices.
