Pre-war eastern Utrecht, just outside the Singel. Brick terraces, tree-lined streets, the wide Wilhelminapark, and a leafy, family-quiet character that has made it one of the city's most desirable wijken.

Buiten Wittevrouwen - literally "outside Wittevrouwen", referring to the position just outside the medieval Singel - is the wijk built around 1900-1930 east of Binnenstad and immediately south of Wittevrouwen proper. Long rows of brick terraces, plane trees lining every street, the broad Wilhelminapark (an English-landscape-style public park opened in 1898) at its eastern edge. The wijk has been desirable for over a century and remains so - predominantly family, predominantly Dutch middle-class, with a slow turnover that has pushed prices to the upper end of the city.

Who lives here

A predominantly Dutch family and professional population, with older homeowners alongside families who have moved in over the last twenty years. The international share is moderate - UU researchers, expats with families, and a small share of consultants. Students are uncommon - apartments are mostly family-sized and pricing pushes student renters elsewhere.

What it's like during the day

Quiet, leafy, daytime-domestic. The Wilhelminapark fills with prams, dogs, joggers and weekend family picnics; the Burgemeester Reigerstraat shopping street to the south (technically in Oudwijk) handles daily errands. The wijk's residential streets carry minimal through-traffic. Primary schools dominate the daytime traffic.

What it's like in the evening

Calm. There is no bar strip - what exists is a small cluster of restaurants on Burgemeester Reigerstraat (in adjacent Oudwijk) and a handful of cafés on Adelaarstraat (in adjacent Vogelenbuurt). The wijk itself goes quiet by 10 PM. For nightlife residents cycle five minutes west into Binnenstad.

Getting around

U-OV bus 4 and 8 run along Burgemeester Reigerstraat and Wilhelminalaan; trams do not enter the wijk. Utrecht Centraal is a twelve-minute bike ride or seven-minute bus. The wijk is small enough that walking covers most internal trips. The cycle into the Utrecht Science Park (UU campus) is fifteen minutes east.

Eating and shopping

Burgemeester Reigerstraat in Oudwijk - three minutes' walk south - is the local high street: bakeries, butchers, small specialty grocers, cafés and bistros. Albert Heijn on Burgemeester Reigerstraat is the main supermarket. The Vredenburg market in Binnenstad is six minutes by bike for fresh produce.

When NOT to pick it

If you want a young, lively, or affordable wijk. Buiten Wittevrouwen is family- and middle-aged-skewed, residential after 9-10 PM, and one of the most expensive wijken in Utrecht per square metre. Apartments are scarce because turnover is slow. Buiten Wittevrouwen is at its best for families with children, established professionals, and anyone who wants pre-war character, a park at the door, and a five-minute cycle into Binnenstad.
