Pre-war east Utrecht, just outside the Singel and immediately north of Oudwijk. Brick terraces, tree-lined streets, the Voorstraat shopping extension, a family-favourite wijk.

Wittevrouwen takes its name from the medieval Wittevrouwenklooster - a convent of witte vrouwen (Cistercian nuns in white habit) that stood on this site until the Reformation. The wijk was built mostly between 1880 and 1920 east of Binnenstad, immediately outside the Singel. Brick terraces, tree-lined streets, the Voorstraat shopping extension running north-east, and the smaller Vogelenbuurt-adjacent café strip on Adelaarstraat and Anton Geesinkstraat. The wijk is part of what locals call Votulast but is administratively separate.

Who lives here

Predominantly Dutch families and middle-aged professionals, with a growing share of younger families and a moderate international presence. Older homeowners remain alongside thirty- and forty-somethings who have moved in over the last fifteen years. The student share is low - apartments are mostly family-sized.

What it's like during the day

Quiet, leafy, daytime-domestic. The Voorstraat extension into Hoogt and Lange Jansstraat handles daily errands and is one of the city's more interesting shopping strips - independent bookshops, design stores, butchers, bakeries. Primary schools, prams, and dogs dominate the daytime traffic. The Lepelenburg park on the southern edge is a small but pretty green space.

What it's like in the evening

Calm. The cafés and bistros on Burgemeester Reigerstraat (in Oudwijk, one block south) fill from 6 PM. Voorstraat's northern end has a steady café scene; the Adelaarstraat strip is a five-minute walk north. After 11 PM the residential streets go quiet. For louder nightlife residents cycle five minutes south-west into Binnenstad.

Getting around

U-OV bus 4 and 8 run along Burgemeester Reigerstraat and Adelaarstraat into Centraal. The cycle into Binnenstad is four minutes; into Centraal eight. The wijk is small enough that walking covers most internal trips.

Eating and shopping

The Voorstraat extension and Burgemeester Reigerstraat (Oudwijk) are the two shopping strips. Independent bookshops, design and household stores, bakeries, butchers, specialty grocers. Albert Heijn on Burgemeester Reigerstraat and Jumbo on Voorstraat are the supermarkets. The Vredenburg market is six minutes by bike.

When NOT to pick it

If you want a young, lively, or affordable wijk. Wittevrouwen is family-skewed and residential after 10-11 PM. Rents per square metre are among the highest in the city outside Binnenstad. Apartments are scarce and turn over slowly. Wittevrouwen is at its best for families with children, established professionals, and anyone who wants pre-war character with two reliable shopping strips at the door and a four-minute cycle into Binnenstad.
