Valencia's port barri within the Poblats Marítims distrito, immediately south of El Cabanyal. The Marina Reial with the Veles e Vents building, the historic Estació del Grao, mid-rise residential blocks, and the beach a short walk away.

El Grau (Spanish El Grao, literally "the step" - the access to the sea) is a barri within the Poblats Marítims district, occupying the area between El Cabanyal to the north, the port to the east, and the Avinguda del Port to the west. Historically the working port-side village - distinct from the fishing community of El Cabanyal - El Grau has been more substantially redeveloped over the past three decades, with the Marina Reial complex (built around the 2007 America's Cup), the Veles e Vents building (David Chipperfield's contemporary architecture landmark), and mid-rise residential blocks dominating the streetscape. The historic Estació del Grao rail station is a small landmark.

Who lives here

A mixed but more middle-class population than El Cabanyal. Young families in the newer apartment buildings around the Marina Reial. Long-time Valencian working-class families in the mid-rise blocks along Avinguda del Port and the streets behind. A growing layer of professionals working in the port-related logistics and corporate offices, in the central city, or in the newer business districts. A small but visible immigrant community from Latin America and Eastern Europe. Less of the artist-and-creative arrival than in El Cabanyal - El Grau is more conventional residential.

What it's like during the day

Mixed residential and waterfront flow. The Marina Reial fills with visitors throughout the day - the Veles e Vents complex hosts restaurants and events, the port walk is heavily used by walkers and cyclists. The streets behind the Marina (Carrer dels Mestres del Treball, Avinguda del Port) have small commerce, cafés and neighbourhood restaurants. The historic Estació del Grao - the oldest railway station in Spain, closed since 2004 and awaiting conversion to a cultural use - is a small landmark on the barri's edge. Schools and small parks are scattered through the barri.

What it's like in the evening

Lively in summer along the Marina Reial, calmer in the residential streets. The Marina restaurants and bars fill from 8 PM until midnight, with a slightly upscale crowd. The Paseo Marítimo and the xiringuitos are five minutes' walk north. For more concentrated nightlife residents take the tram or Metro to El Cabanyal or Russafa.

Getting around

MetroValencia L5 and L7 terminate at Marítim (formerly Marítim-Serrería), the intermodal hub at the western edge that also gathers tram lines L6 and L8. Tram L8 serves the Marina Reial Joan Carles I stop by the waterfront, and tram L4 runs north toward El Cabanyal and the beach. The nearest functioning Rail Cercanías stop is València-Cabanyal (lines C-5 and C-6), just north in El Cabanyal. EMT bus lines run extensively. Cycling is excellent - dedicated bike lanes on Avinguda del Port, the Marina walk, and the connection to the Paseo Marítimo and Jardín del Turia.

Eating and shopping

Marina-oriented and neighbourhood. The Marina Reial restaurants - including modern Spanish and Mediterranean addresses - are popular. The Paseo Marítimo paella restaurants (La Pepica, Casa Carmela) are five minutes' walk. Within the barri, neighbourhood cafés, forns and fruteries run along Avinguda del Port. Mid-size supermarkets (Mercadona, Consum, Lidl) cover daily needs. For dense central shopping residents go to the central distritos.

When NOT to pick it

If you want a barri with strong historic character - El Grau is more redeveloped than El Cabanyal and the traditional fabric is less preserved. If you want central walkability to the Mercat Central - El Grau is a tram or Metro ride. If you want bohemian or alternative barri feel - El Grau is more conventional middle-class residential. El Grau is at its best for families and professionals who want modern apartments, the Marina Reial waterfront at the door, easy bike access to both the beach and the central city, and a notably less tourist-impacted profile than El Cabanyal to the north.
