Oberschöneweide is a neighborhood in the Treptow-Köpenick district, looking onto the Spree in south-east Berlin. It was the city's industrial heart - here AEG built its great electrotechnical factories and the neighborhood earned the nickname Elektropolis. Today those red-brick workshops along Wilhelminenhofstraße are in full regeneration: they host the campus of HTW Berlin, the city's largest university of applied sciences, along with ateliers and cultural spaces. It has become a magnet for students, still rough but in full change.
Who lives here
Lots of HTW students, who set the tone of the neighborhood during the academic year. Alongside them, historic working-class families, people who arrived in the DDR years, young workers and creatives drawn by large spaces and an atmosphere less polished than the center. A down-to-earth, plain mix, evolving.
What it's like during the day
By day the rhythm is set by the campus. Wilhelminenhofstraße is the main axis, with the converted AEG sheds, the odd café, copy shops and student canteens. The Reinbeckhallen and the Rathenau-Hallen host exhibitions, events and spaces for artists. Along the Spree there are striking industrial views and stretches of riverfront where you breathe an air of transformation.
What it's like in the evening
In the evening it's quiet and intimate, far from the chaos of the center. The odd neighborhood Kneipe, student bars near the campus, cultural events in the converted halls. It's not a club or nightlife area: those after techno and long nights go elsewhere. Here a neighborhood atmosphere prevails.
Getting around
The trams run along Wilhelminenhofstraße and Edisonstraße: lines 27, 60 and 67 serve the HTW campus (Rathenaustraße stop), with M17, 21, 37 and 63 also covering the neighborhood. The Schöneweide S-Bahn station, just across the Spree in Niederschöneweide, is served by lines S8, S9, S46, S47 and S85, plus several buses, and connects directly to Ostkreuz and BER airport.
Eating and shopping
A simple, practical offering: supermarkets like Rewe, Edeka and Netto, bakeries, the odd Imbiss with kebab and currywurst, Vietnamese places and unpretentious neighborhood restaurants. For shopping and daily meals you'll find everything; for a wider choice you head toward Köpenick or the center.
When NOT to pick it
If you want intense nightlife and bars on every corner: here the evening is quiet. If you need to be already in the heart of Berlin, the south-east location takes a few extra minutes. If you're after a finished, polished neighborhood, parts of Oberschöneweide remain industrial and a work in progress.
For an HTW student or for those who want space, authenticity and a neighborhood on the Spree being reborn step by step, Oberschöneweide is an honest and increasingly interesting bet.
