At the far south-west of Berlin, on the great Wannsee lake: the historic lido, the villas and the woods. Beautiful, but far from everything.
Wannsee is the neighborhood at the far south-west of Berlin, in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district, looking onto the great lake of the same name - actually a wide bend of the river Havel. Here the city ends and a landscape of water, woods and art nouveau villas begins: it's where Berliners go for a swim in summer, so much so that they jokingly call it their seaside. It's home to the historic Strandbad Wannsee, one of the largest freshwater lidos in Europe, the Pfaueninsel (the peacock island, part of the UNESCO heritage), and the Haus der Wannsee-Konferenz, today a memorial. Beautiful, but very far from everything.
Who lives here
An affluent, stable population. German families in small houses and homes with gardens, accomplished professionals, long-established retirees, the odd diplomat. Very few students or young singles: it's a quiet residential area, not a neighborhood for university life. Those who choose to live here are after silence, greenery and water, not buzz.
What it's like during the day
By day it's quiet and green. In summer the hub is the Strandbad Wannsee, with its long sandy beach and the iconic wicker beach chairs. You walk in the woods around the lake, go sailing, visit the Pfaueninsel with its free-roaming peacocks and the little white castle. The Haus der Wannsee-Konferenz and the nearby Liebermann-Villa round out the area of villas along the shore.
What it's like in the evening
The evening is very quiet, almost asleep. A few restaurants and beer gardens by the lake, places more for day-trips than for nightlife. No clubs, no nightlife: after dinner the neighborhood stops. To really go out you have to take the S-Bahn toward the center.
Getting around
Berlin-Wannsee station is a major hub: the S-Bahn lines S1 (toward Zehlendorf, Schöneberg and the city's north) and S7 (through the center, Hauptbahnhof and Friedrichstraße) pass through, plus regional RE and RB trains. From the station bus 114 goes to the Haus der Wannsee-Konferenz, the 218 toward the Pfaueninsel and the Strandbad. The BVG F10 ferry links Wannsee to Alt-Kladow (with a normal AB ticket), while the historic Pfaueninsel-Fähre reaches the island.
Eating and shopping
For everyday shopping there are supermarkets around the station (Edeka, Rewe), enough but not as widespread as in the central neighborhoods. The food offering is limited and geared toward day-trips: lake fish, German cuisine, scenic beer gardens. For choice and variety you have to head toward Zehlendorf or Steglitz.
When NOT to pick it
If you study or work in the center and want to get home early in the evening: travel times are long and the S-Bahn is the only real link. If you're after social life, venues, young flatmates: you won't find them here. If you need everything close at hand: services are few and far between.
Wannsee is the right pick only if you put peace, greenery and water before everything else, and if it doesn't weigh on you to live far from the beating heart of Berlin.
