Living in Westend, Berlin
Jugendstil villas, tree-lined avenues, discreet affluence. Westend is one of the greenest and quietest neighbourhoods of West Berlin, built around the Olympiastadion.
Westend is a strongly residential district that grew in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a "garden suburb" on the English model. Less known than Charlottenburg, it is among the calmest places to live in West Berlin, mixing Jugendstil villas, bourgeois Altbau and postwar modernist buildings.
Origin and character
Planned from 1866 as the Villenkolonie Westend, inspired by London's residential suburbs, it has long been a favoured address for bankers, professionals, artists. Largely spared by the war, it keeps a 19th- and early 20th-century feel with broad streets and villas in private gardens. The Olympiastadion (1936) is the district's most imposing landmark.
What to expect
Quiet leafy streets, single villas with gardens, multi-family buildings in Heimatschutz and Bauhaus styles, private parks. Reichsstraße and Theodor-Heuss-Platz are the main arteries. The area is known for its 1920s-30s modernist houses and for diplomatic residences. Kiez life is very soft: few people on the street, many in their gardens.
Transport
U2 (Theodor-Heuss-Platz, Neu-Westend, Olympia-Stadion, Ruhleben) is the main axis. S-Bahn at Messe Süd and Olympiastadion connects to the Ring. BER airport is reachable via metro + regional train. Mitte is 25-30 minutes away, but the district is built for people who don't need to be downtown all day.
What to do here
Olympiastadion (concerts, Hertha BSC home games), Waldbühne (one of Europe's finest open-air summer venues), walks in the bordering Grunewald, horse riding and tennis. Schloss Charlottenburg is a short bike ride away. The retail strip around Reichsstraße has good cafés, delis and quality Italian restaurants.
Best fit for
Families with children, senior professionals, anyone wanting a green, quiet upper-middle-class neighbourhood. Particularly good if you work near the Messe or in Spandau. Less suited to students, young singles looking for nightlife, or anyone who wants bars and restaurants on foot.
