The district that kept its wooden houses: cobbled streets, carved timber facades and gardens, ten minutes from the centre.

Bojary lies immediately east of the centre of Białystok, a little over a kilometre from the middle, and it is the most distinctive place in the city. It preserves the nineteenth and early twentieth century wooden houses, with carved decoration and small garden plots, that once made up much of Białystok and were almost entirely replaced by concrete after the war.

What it is

A quiet residential district of low buildings on a partly cobbled street grid, with a scattering of surviving wooden houses among later infill. One street in particular has around twenty wooden properties from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century standing on both sides.

The city tourist office has marked a walking route through it, which tells you both that the architecture is valued and that it is not obvious: the wooden houses are scattered rather than continuous.

Who lives here

Long-standing residents, including families who have been in the same houses for generations, plus people who moved in for the character of the place. It is small and the housing stock is limited, so the rental market here is thin.

What it's like during the day

Quiet, low-rise and green, in a way that feels more like a village than a district of a city of nearly three hundred thousand people. The centre is a ten to fifteen minute walk.

What it's like in the evening

Residential and very quiet. There is essentially nothing to do here in the evening, and the centre is close enough that this does not matter much.

Getting around

Walking into the centre is the natural thing to do. Buses run on the main roads around the district. As everywhere in Białystok there are no trams, so check the bus line if you work further out.

Eating and shopping

Very little on the spot. Small shops, and everything else in the centre a short walk away.

When NOT to pick it

If you want choice, because there are few flats and they come up rarely. Old wooden and low-rise housing also means being careful about heating and insulation, which matters in the coldest large city in Poland. It is the right choice if you want somewhere genuinely characterful within walking distance of the centre.
