Piața Amzei is a small central square in Bucharest, known for its market, one of the few real covered markets left in the heart of the city. It sits a short distance from Calea Victoriei and Piața Romană, in a fabric of period buildings and narrow streets that keeps the character of interwar Bucharest.
Who lives here
Professionals, long-standing residents, students attending the central faculties. It is an extremely central area with flats in period buildings, so expensive, but with a real neighbourhood life that the rest of the centre often lacks, precisely because of the market.
What it is like by day
By day the market sets the rhythm: stalls of fruit, vegetables, cheese, meat, flowers, people doing their shopping. Around it are cafés, shops, offices. It is one of the few parts of the centre where you see everyday life and not just people passing through.
What it is like in the evening
The evening is quiet, with a few restaurants and bars. The representative centre of Calea Victoriei and the nightlife of the old town are both a few minutes on foot, so you can choose what kind of evening to have without having to put up with it downstairs.
Getting around
Everything on foot. Piața Romană on the M2 is a few minutes away, as are Universitate and Piața Victoriei. Buses and trolleybuses on the boulevards. It is one of the best connected areas in the city simply because it is at the centre of everything.
Eating and shopping
The market solves the shopping and remains the main reason to choose this area. Around it there are urban supermarkets, bakeries and shops. The restaurant offer is varied, from historic places to quick lunch spots for the offices.
When NOT to choose it
Prices are central and the flats often old. The noise of the market starts early in the morning, and for some that is a problem. Greenery is almost absent. It is the right choice for anyone who wants the centre with a real neighbourhood life; the wrong one for anyone who needs a quiet morning or a bargain.
