Living in Cartierul Verde, Bucharest

Cartierul Verde is an area of recent construction south-west of Bucharest, in the territory of the commune of Bragadiru, just beyond the city boundary. It is part of the wave of residential development that has filled the first ring around the capital in the last fifteen years, with low buildings and terraced houses.

Who lives here

Young couples and families who were looking for a new home at accessible prices, workers who accept the commute in exchange for space. It is an area with a young population, almost all of it recently arrived, and with a community life still forming.

What it is like by day

By day it is quiet and residential, with the orderly look of newly built districts: regular streets, low buildings, little internal traffic. What is missing are the established public services and facilities that historic districts have had for decades.

What it is like in the evening

The evening is silent. A few places, supermarkets open late. There is no nightlife and that is not what you come here for.

Getting around

The district is outside the commune of Bucharest and is not served by the metro. You depend on buses and on the car to reach the city. The journey to the centre takes time, above all at peak hours. This is an area designed for people who drive.

Eating and shopping

Chain supermarkets and shops cover the essentials. For a wider choice you head to the shopping centres of the south-western side. The restaurant offer is limited.

When NOT to choose it

The distance from the city is real and public transport links are weak: without a car life becomes complicated. Services are still few. It is the right choice for anyone who wants a new, quiet and inexpensive home and has their own vehicle; the wrong one for anyone who lives by public transport or needs the centre every day.
