Colentina is the long artery leading north-east out of Bucharest, and the district that formed along it. It is one of the largest and least uniform areas in the city: blocks, low houses, warehouses, and in the background the chain of lakes with Plumbuita and its monastery. It is working-class, much lived in, and among the areas where you can rent for the least.
Who lives here
Long-standing families, workers, and many young people who choose the area for the prices. It is a working-class district, with marked differences between one stretch of the artery and another: some parts are quiet and green near the water, others are noisy and busy.
What it is like by day
By day life is concentrated along the artery: shops, supermarkets, constant traffic. Moving away towards the lakes you find quieter zones, with greenery and walks along the water. The Plumbuita monastery is one of the points of interest in the area and one of its calmest corners.
What it is like in the evening
The evening is residential and quiet away from the artery. There are local bars but no organised nightlife. Anyone who wants to go out moves towards the centre or towards Floreasca.
Getting around
The area is not served directly by the metro and this is its main limitation. You travel by tram and bus, numerous and frequent along the artery, connecting to Obor and from there to the metro network. By car it is convenient for leaving the city to the north-east, less so for getting into the centre at peak times.
Eating and shopping
Supermarkets, discount stores and shops along the artery cover everything. The great Obor market is a short distance away. The restaurant offer is working-class and affordable.
When NOT to choose it
The absence of the metro weighs on you every day. The artery is busy, noisy and not attractive. The quality of the fabric varies a great deal from one stretch to another, so the precise location matters more than elsewhere. It is the right choice for anyone looking for the lowest price while staying in the city, with water and greenery nearby; the wrong one for anyone who depends on the metro.
