Cotroceni is one of the most elegant and quiet districts in Bucharest, just west of the centre. It is dominated by the Cotroceni Palace, the official residence of the President of Romania, and took shape in the late nineteenth century as a villa area for doctors, professors, officers and intellectuals, around the old monastery later turned into a royal palace. It is one of the few parts of the capital that remained almost untouched by the communist regime: tree-lined streets, architecture spanning the late nineteenth century and the interwar period, and a calm that is rare so close to the centre.
