Crângași is a residential district west of the centre of Bucharest, grown up around the metro station of the same name and looking onto Lake Morii, the largest artificial body of water in the city. It is made up mostly of blocks from the 1970s and 1980s, with a regular layout and services spread throughout.
Who lives here
A broad mix: families who have lived here for generations, young workers drawn by the metro and the moderate rents, students who choose the area for its closeness to the university hub of Grozăvești and Politehnica, a few stops away. It is a working-class district in the good sense of the phrase, unpretentious and much lived in.
What it is like by day
By day the district has the ordinary rhythm of a dense residential area: shops along the main roads, people at the small markets, children in the courtyards between the blocks. Lake Morii and its embankments are the best resource, with space to walk and run and an open view that is rare in Bucharest. The inner fabric is quiet, the main streets are busy.
What it is like in the evening
The evening is quiet and residential. There are a few local bars and restaurants, but to really go out you take the metro and head into the centre, a few minutes away. In summer the lakeshore is an informal meeting place.
Getting around
The strong point is Crângași station on the M1, which reaches the centre in a handful of stops and connects with the other branches of the network. The surface is served by trams and buses running on the main roads. The western position makes both the centre and the motorway exits convenient.
Eating and shopping
Chain supermarkets, local shops, bakeries and small markets cover everyday shopping without needing to travel. The restaurant offer is simple and local. For wider shopping there are the shopping centres of the western side, a few minutes away.
When NOT to choose it
If you are looking for urban beauty, Crângași does not offer much: it is a functional district, made of blocks, and some parts show their age. Internal nightlife is almost absent. It is the right choice for anyone who wants to spend less while staying extremely well connected; the wrong one for anyone looking for atmosphere and bars within walking distance.
