Dorobanți is one of the most elegant districts in Bucharest, between the centre and the green belt of the north. It develops around Calea Dorobanți and the square of the same name, and is made of interwar villas, low buildings, embassies and one of the best concentrations of restaurants, cafés and shops in the city.
Who lives here
Professionals, well-off families, diplomatic staff, foreigners moved here for work. It is a prestigious area with high prices and a narrower room market than elsewhere, but with flats that are often large and well kept in the period buildings.
What it is like by day
By day the district is quiet and well tended: tree-lined streets, villas, little traffic in the inner roads. The main roads concentrate shops, offices and bars. It is one of the parts of Bucharest where walking is a pleasure and where the upkeep of the streets shows.
What it is like in the evening
In the evening Dorobanți is one of the best areas in the city for going out: polished restaurants, bistros, cocktail bars, terraces full in summer. This is not noisy nightlife, it is a more grown-up evening. The residential streets stay quiet even when the bars are full.
Getting around
The area has no metro station at its heart, but it is enclosed between important hubs: Piața Romană and Piața Victoriei to the west on the M2, Ștefan cel Mare to the east on the M1. Buses and trolleybuses cross it. Most internal journeys are made on foot, and the centre is a short distance away.
Eating and shopping
The restaurant offer is among the best in the city for variety and quality. For shopping there are urban supermarkets, specialist shops and the market of Piața Dorobanților, which remains a landmark of the district.
When NOT to choose it
Prices are high and available rooms few. This is not an area for anyone looking for a bargain. The absence of a metro stop right in the heart of the district is felt by anyone travelling any distance every day. It is right for anyone who wants elegance, good bars and well-kept streets; wrong for anyone on a tight budget.
