Grozăvești is Bucharest's university district in the most literal sense: this is where you find the main campus of the Universitatea Politehnica, the largest technical university in the country, with its faculties, its libraries and above all its halls of residence. It stretches along the left bank of the Dâmbovița, between Cotroceni to the east and Militari to the west, and it runs on the academic calendar rather than on the city's.
Who lives here
Students, by an overwhelming margin, and the people who orbit around them: researchers, PhD students, university staff. To these you can add long-standing families in the residential blocks along the river and, in recent years, young workers who choose the area for its position and for rents lower than in the centre. It is one of the youngest districts in Bucharest and you can feel it: the average age collapses in September and climbs back in July.
What it is like by day
By day the district is the campus. A constant flow between the faculties, queues at the canteens, bicycles and scooters, knots of people outside the entrances. The Dâmbovița and its embankments give the area some air and a straight walk that many use for running. Outside the university zone the fabric is mixed: residential blocks, a few converted industrial remains, local shops. This is not a picture-postcard neighbourhood, it is a functional one.
What it is like in the evening
The evening is a student one: cheap pubs, fast food open late, parties in the halls and in shared flats. This is not the nightlife of the old town, it is something more informal and noisier right next to the residences. Anyone looking for quiet during term time would do well to look at the buildings furthest from the halls. In the summer months the district empties out and turns suddenly quiet.
Getting around
The location is one of the strong points. The metro serves the area with Grozăvești station on the M1 and Politehnica on the M3, both right beside the campus, and nearby Eroilor connects the M1, M3 and M5. The centre is a few minutes away. Several tram and bus lines run along the Dâmbovița embankments and on Splaiul Independenței. For anyone studying here, most journeys are made on foot.
Eating and shopping
The offer is calibrated for students: university canteens, fast food, pizzerias, shaorma places open into the night, chain supermarkets and small grocers. For a big shop you go to the supermarkets along the main roads or to the shopping centre in Cotroceni, a short distance away. This is an area where you can eat for very little, and that is part of why students choose it.
When NOT to choose it
If you are looking for quiet, elegance or a grown-up neighbourhood, Grozăvești is not for you. The evening noise around the halls is real, the urban fabric is untidy and the areas along the river carry traffic and dust. It is the right district if you study at the Politehnica or want to pay little while staying two stops from the centre; the wrong one if you want a quiet corner to come home to.
