Large, working-class and served by the M3: one of the districts with the most rentals in the west.
Militari is one of the great residential districts of Bucharest, stretching west along Bulevardul Iuliu Maniu. It is made up largely of blocks built between the 1960s and the 1980s, with a regular layout, services spread throughout and the metro crossing it from one end to the other. It is one of the places with the most rentals in the city, for a simple reason: it costs little and it is well connected.
Who lives here
Families who have lived here for decades, young couples, students from the Politehnica a few stops away, workers who choose the area for the ratio between price and connections. It is a working-class district, very dense and much lived in, with a population varied in age and origin.
What it is like by day
By day Militari is full of ordinary life: shops on the ground floors of the blocks, small markets, pharmacies, schools, people in the gardens between the buildings. Bulevardul Iuliu Maniu is the commercial axis and the busiest road. Behind the main roads the fabric grows quieter, with courtyards and green spaces between the blocks.
What it is like in the evening
The evening is residential. Local bars and restaurants, shopping centres open late, but no nightlife. Anyone who wants to go out takes the metro and is in the centre in a quarter of an hour. This is an area where you come home in the evening.
Getting around
The district is served by the M3 with several stations along the boulevard, among them Păcii, Gorjului and Lujerului, and this is its main strength: the centre is reached directly and predictably. On the surface there are numerous bus and tram lines. By car the exits westwards are convenient, but traffic on the boulevard at peak times is heavy.
Eating and shopping
Everything is there without travelling: chain supermarkets, discount stores, local markets, bakeries. There are large shopping centres along the boulevard and at the edges of the area. The restaurant offer is simple, local and affordable.
When NOT to choose it
It is a district of blocks, dense and without aesthetic pretensions. Some buildings show their age and maintenance is uneven. Traffic on the main axis is constant. It is the right choice for anyone who wants to spend little and be well connected; the wrong one for anyone looking for urban beauty, silence or a fashionable district.
